Plot:
Taken from legend, the work tells of the seduction of the nymph Shakuntala by King
Dushyanta, his rejection of the girl and his child, and their subsequent reunion in
heaven.

Setting:
The Recognition of Shakuntala, the greatest work by classical Indian playwright
Kalidasa and perhaps the most renowned Sanskrit play, is a very lush work. The setting

Themes include Love, Duty, Fate, Nature, Society and the influence of the divine on
human lives.

Point of view:
The narrative is primarily third person omniscient, providing insight into the thoughts and
feelings of various Characters.

Love vs Duty: Dushyanta’s love for Shakuntala is at odds with his duty as a king. He is
torn between his duty to his kingdom and his love for Shakuntala. Dushyanta’s duty to
his kingdom requires him to leave Shakuntala and return to his kingdom. This creates a
conflict between his duty and his personal desires.

Tone:
The tone is often Romantic, Mystical, and tragic, with a blend of joy and sorrow.
