Chapter 2 Pressure Vessel Design


1) Derive Clavarino’s and Brinie’s equations for pressure vessel

pressure in the cylinder is 10 MPa. The cylinder is made of cast iron FG 200 and the
factor of safety is 5. Determine the diameter and the thickness of the cylinder.

9) The inner diameter of a cylindrical tank for liquefied gas is 250 mm. The gas pressure is
limited to 15 MPa. The tank is made of plain carbon steel 10C4 (Sut = 340 N/mm2 and m
= 0.27) and the factor of safety is 5. Calculate the cylinder wall thickness.
10) A high pressure cylinder consists of a steel tube with inner and outer diameters of 20 mm
and 40 mm respectively. It is jacketed by an outer steel tube, having an outer diameter of
60 mm. The tubes are assembled by shrinking process in such a way that maximum
principal stress induced in any tube is limited to 100 N/mm2. Calculate the shrinkage
pressure and original dimensions of the tubes (E = 207 kN/mm2).

11) An air receiver consists of a cylinder closed by hemispherical ends as shown in Figure 3a.
It has a storage capacity of 0.25 m3 and operating internal pressure of 5 MPa. It is made
of plain carbon steel 10 C4 (Sut = 340 N/mm2) and the factor of safety is 4. Neglecting
effect of welded joints determine dimensions of the receiver.

12) A compound cylinder consists of an inner steel tube with inner and outer diameters of 40
mm and 60 mm respectively. It is reinforced by shrinking a steel jacket of outer diameter
80 mm. The compound cylinder is subjected to an internal pressure of 60 MPa The
shrinkage allowance is such that the maximum circumferential stresses in inner tube and
jacket are same.
Calculate:
i) The interferential pressure and
ii) The original dimensions of inner tube and jacket.
Assume E = 207000 N/mm2.
13) A pressure vessel consists of a cylindrical shell with an inside diameter of 1650 mm,
which is closed by torispherical heads with a crown radius of 1300 mm. The operating
pressure inside the vessel is 1.5 MPa. The yield strength of the material used for the shell
and head is 255 N/mm2 and the weld joint efficiency may be assumed to be 0.8. The
corrosion allowance is 2 mm. Determine the thickness of the cylindrical shell and the
torispherical head.

Chapter 3:- Design of Braking and Clutch System

A) Brakes
1. Write short notes on :
i) Band brake
ii) Auto frottage
2. Explain Thermal consideration and rating of brakes.
3. What is the energy consideration in the design of brakes?

5. Describe energy consideration in the design of braking system in hoist and car.
6. An automotive type internal expanding brake (double-shoe) is as shown in Fig. 4a.
The face width of the friction lining is 40 mm and the maximum intensity of pressure
is limited to 1 N/mm2. The coefficient of friction is 0.32. The angle 61 can be
assumed to be zero, calculate :
i) The actuating force P, and
ii) The torque-absorbing capacity of the brake

7. An automotive vehicle weighing l0 kN and moving on the level road at a speed of


100 Km/hr is brought to the rest in 4 seconds by applying the brakes on all four
wheels. The mass moment of inertia of each wheel about the axis of rotation is 0.75
Kg-m2. The rolling radius of the wheel is 0.175m. The rotating and reciprocating
parts of the engine and transmission system are equivalent to a mass moment of
inertia of 2.5 kg-m2 at 4000 rpm. The mass of each brake drum assembly is 10 Kg.
The specific heat of the brake drum is 500 J/kg°C.
Calculate:
i) The temperature rise of the brake drum assembly and
ii) The braking torque capacity of each brake.
8. A flywheel of 100 kg mass and 350 mm radius of gyration is rotating at 500 rpm. It is
brought to rest by means of a brake. The mass of the brake drum assembly is 5 kg.
The brake drum is made of cast-iron FG260(c = 460 J/kg°C ). Assuming that the total
heat generated is absorbed by the brake drum only, calculate the temperature rise.

B) Clutches
1. Compare :
i) Single plate and multiplate clutches
ii) Dry and wet clutches.
2. Derive an expression for torque transmission capacity of plate clutch based on
uniform pressure theory (p=C). Discuss uniform pressure and uniform wear theory in
relation to clutch design.
3. Derive an expression for torque transmission capacity of plate clutch assuming
uniform wear theory (p*r = C).
4. Discuss the considerations used in design of centrifugal clutch.

5. A centrifugal clutch, transmitting 20 KW at 750 rpm consists of four shoes. The


clutch is to be engaged at 500 rpm. The inner radius of the drum is 165 mm. The
radius of the centre of gravity of the shoes is 140 mm when the clutch is engaged. The
coefficient of friction is 0.3 mm, while the permissible pressure on friction lining is
0.1 N/mm2. Calculate: (i) Mass of each shoe (ii) Dimensions of friction lining.
6. A plate clutch consists of one pair of contacting surfaces. The inner and outer
diameters of the friction discs are 100 mm and 200 mm respectively. The coefficient
of friction is 0.2 and permissible intensity of pressure is 1 N/mm2. Assuming uniform
wear theory calculates power transmitting capacity of the clutch at 750 r.p.m.
7. A cone clutch with asbestos friction lining is used to transmit 35 KW power at 2000
rpm. The coefficient of friction between the contacting surfaces is 0.15, while the
permissible intensity of pressure is 0.3 N/mm2. The cone angle is 24°. The face width
of the cone is not to exceed one third of the mean radius. Assuming the uniform wear
condition, determine:
i) The dimensions of friction surfaces
ii) The axial force required to engage the clutch:
iii) The axial force required to disengage the clutch
8. A centrifugal clutch transmitting 20KW at 800 rpm consists of four shoes. The clutch
is to be engaged at 500 rpm. The inner radius of the drum is 165 mm while the radius
to the center of gravity the shoes in engaged position is 140 mm. The coefficient of
friction is 0.3. Calculate the mass of each shoe.

9. A multi speed gear box is to be designed for a headstock of a turret lathe for nine
spindle speeds ranging from 30 rpm to 1000 rpm. If the gear box is driven by 5KW,
720 rpm electric motor through the belt drive; Assume same module for all gears.

11. A three stage, twelve-speed gear box is to be used in machine tool for spindle speeds
ranging between 25 rpm and 1500 rpm. The second stage of gear box consists of three
speed steps. If gear box is driven by 3.7 KW, 750 rpm electric motor through the belt
drives:
