One of the reasons Sheikh Hamad decided to handover power to his son was to ensure a smooth succession. He was appointed the emir’s cabinet and took charge of
day-to-day affairs in Qatar. However, Hamad and his father fell out in the early 1990s. Hamad’s father tried to regain control of the economy, but Sheikh Hamad
overthrew him in a bloodless coup and he took over the country in 1996.
The Sheikh Hamad Museum is located 45km south of Abu Dhabi city, and it features an incredible collection of off-road vehicles. The museum is open daily from 9am
