Verbs and Their Forms

In today's lesson, we will discuss Verbs and their forms. We use different verb
forms in various tenses, voices, and moods. We must understand these Verbs
and their forms to speak and write English appropriately. Verbs are of the
following kinds based on how they create their past, past-participle, and
present-participle.

The verb itself, as well as its various forms, is a fundamental component of
English. A verb is derived from the Latin word ‘verbum.’ Because it is the most
crucial component of a sentence, it is so named. It is a word that implies or
declares something about a subject or object.

To construct a tense, various verb tenses must be used. Therefore,
understanding the three forms of verbs—first form, second form, and third
form—as well as their usages, is essential for anyone learning the English
language, which is the most widely spoken language in the world. The
following forms are widely used and of utmost importance.

Weak Verbs/ Regular Verbs

Regular verbs are those whose past tenses require the suffixes -ed, -d, or -t.
Because they depend on these extra letters, they are sometimes referred to as
weak. Weak verbs are any verbs whose past tense is the same as the present.

Strong Verbs:
Strong verbs are those that change only the inside vowels without ending in d,
ed, or t to form their past (v) and past participle (v). The past tense of verbs is
created by altering a vowel and adding n, ne, or en to the past participle.

There are certain rules for making the Present Participle:

1. Typically, the ing prefix is appended to the verb to create the present
participle. Acting, barking, calling, and other examples.
2. If the verb ends in an "e," the suffix "ing" is added after the "e."
Examples are misusing, taking, and arriving. Dye-dyeing and eye-eyeing
are two exceptions.
3. ing is added after the consonant has been doubled when the verb ends in a
single consonant that is followed by a vowel. For example, begging and
clapping, sitting and clapping, stopping and stopping, cutting and cutting,
etc.
4. If the verb ends in r, w, n, or y with a single vowel before it, however, the
verb is constructed by adding ing. For example, answer-answering,
permitting, happening, playing, etc.
5. When the verb ends in a single consonant and a double vowel, ing is
added without doubling the consonant. As an illustration, consider the
verbs beat, meet, eat, clean, etc.
6. If the verb ends in "ie," ing is inserted after it is taken out and y is used in
its place. For Example,
• Die-Dying
• Lie-Lying
• Tie-Tying

Rules for making Singular Present Form:

• We add s to the verb if the subject is individual and written in the third
person. the verbs "takes," "changes," "likes," and "uses," for instance. The
verbs that end in ss, sh, ch and o have additional es for instance “does”,
“undergoes,” “echoes,” “passes”, “misses,” and “approaches.”
• Cross-crosses, push-pushes, catch-catches, fix-fixes, and go-goes are a
few examples. Turn the y to an I and add es when a consonant follows a
word with a y ending. Cry-cries, copy-copies, studying-studies, etc. are a
few examples.
• When a verb is conjugated, its root form is employed to produce various
forms of the verb. With regular verbs, which are those whose past tenses
are created by appending a -ed, this is always true, but depending on the
tense, it might not be the case with irregular verbs.
• The verb form that deviates the most from other conjugations is the third
person singular (he/she/it/one) form.
• This verb form ends in s (or, sporadically, es) for normal verbs. The root
word is modified by the suffix "-ing" to become the present participle
verb form.
• It is employed in the progressive past, present, and future tenses. For
normal verbs, the past tense and past participle form is the root word +
ed. It only applies to past tenses.
• For some irregular verbs, it might be challenging to discern the past
participle. If you are at all unclear of the past participle, it is better to look
these up in a dictionary.

Summary
In this chapter, we learned about Verbs and their forms. A verb is described as a
job or action that the subject does. They do play a significant role in English
grammar. Verbs, which are the building blocks of sentences and phrases,
convey what the subject is thinking or feeling, even if they are only existing.
Additionally, the only word type that is definitely required to form a sentence is
a verb. Even nouns, which denote things, are not required to appear in every
sentence. Verbs have the job of explaining what is being done or how someone
or something is feeling. Nouns serve a variety of purposes in sentences. A noun,
such as a person or an object performing the activity described by the verb, can
act as the subject of a sentence.
