Appareo Transfer Utility User Guide

1 Introduction
The Appareo Transfer Utility is a program that allows for the automatic downloading of flight files
from removable media cards (such as Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) cards) taken from
Appareo flight recorders to a computer, and the subsequent upload of those files to the Appareo
flight data server.

Users are only required to use the Appareo Transfer Utility service manager interface to initially
configure or change the configuration of the application.

Use your computer’s SD card reader or the SanDisk MicroMate external card reader that is
included in the shipment of the system to read flight files from the Appareo flight recorder SDHC
cards.

1.2 Appareo Virtual File System

The Vision 1000 records flight information onto an SDHC card using a virtual file system format.
The Appareo Transfer Utility uses the Appareo Virtual File System (AVFS) driver to interact with
the SDHC card data. The AVFS driver is installed on a computer during the Appareo Transfer
Utility installation process.

When an SDHC card containing Vision 1000 recorded data is inserted into a computer, the
AVFS driver creates a virtual drive, which the ATU uses to access flight data. By default, the
virtual drive is assigned to M of a computer. However, if M is already assigned, the next
available drive is assigned.

10 Using Appareo Transfer Utility

Once you have finished configuring the Appareo Transfer Utility, you are ready to download
flight files from the SDHC card and upload those flight files to your local computer and/or the
Appareo flight data server.

10.1 Downloading files from an SDHC card

To prepare to download flight files from an SDHC card using the Appareo Transfer Utility, follow
the steps below:
1. Remove the SDHC card from the Appareo flight recorder.
2. Connect the SanDisk MicroMate external card reader (which is included with the
shipment of every Vision 1000 system) to the computer.
3. Insert the SDHC card into the SD card reader. Once the virtual drive is created, the
Appareo Transfer Utility will transfer the files to the local storage location.
4. The SDHC card can be removed from the SD card reader once the computer emits a
dual-tone beep. This beep signifies all the files from the SDHC card have downloaded to
the local storage location.
NOTE: The SDHC card does not need to be in the computer’s card reader while the
flight files are being processed for uploading or archiving.

If you chose to download the files from the SDHC card when the computer with Appareo
Transfer Utility is unattended (e.g. overnight) or you do not hear the dual-tone beep, you can
remove the SDHC card if the Appareo Transfer Utility status is Idle.

NOTE: If you chose a daily scheduled upload time, the files will remain in the local storage
location until the specified upload time. If you did not choose a daily upload time, the files will
immediately transfer flight files to the Appareo flight data server.

If you click the Close button, the Appareo Transfer Utility will continue to run and minimize to
the desktop application tray. To check the Appareo Transfer Utility status, point to the icon in
the desktop application tray.

WARNING: Don’t forget to replace the SDHC card in the aircraft’s Appareo flight recording
device once you have finished downloading flight files from the SDHC card to the local
computer.

NOTE: If you do not have an active Appareo Flight Data Monitoring subscription, you will not be
able to access the flight files that were uploaded to the Appareo flight data server.
