Data Wrangling

Question 1

Data wrangling refers to the transformation and mapping raw data into a more

understandable format for the end-user of information. PittaRosso, Burning Glass Technologies,

and HBS have utilized data wrangling principles to solve various problems at hand. HBS

classroom activities were interrupted at the onset of the COVID pandemic. Social distancing was

introduced, meaning that all the students could not fit into their regular classrooms. The

institution introduced hybrid classrooms to facilitate remote learning. Data were collected to

determine the categories of learners eligible for online schooling. Data wrangling identified eight

categories of MBA students justified to attend remote classes.

PittaRosso, on the other hand, utilized data wrangling to develop artificial intelligence-

driven pricing and promotion. The marketing specialists at the organization collected the AI

system inputs from each stock-keeping unit, historical data on sales, discount events, and

inventory. The AI system recommended appropriate future pricing, discount, and promotions

through data wrangling. Lastly, Burning Glass Technologies used data wrangling to transform

from selling data and data-based insights to selling products derived from its data. The firm

realized that clients would use the provided insights as a reference point rather than a central

decision-making tool. There was a dire need to craft explicit guidelines that maximize the

company’s data value. Burning Glass replaced dashboards tailored to individual markets with

models that could address all three market segments. The models had insights that provided data,

forecasts, and reports. Data wrangling was fundamental for mitigating the challenges among the

three identified organizations.

Question 2
DATA WRANGLING 3

Burning Glass Technologies used more sophisticated data-wrangling methodologies than

PittaRosso. Burning Glass’ AI system would structure a dataset for ranking resumes depending

on the anticipated fit for a particular position initially. The marketing technological professionals

put efforts to pivot the company’s abilities from matching applicants to jobs to matching jobs to

eligible individuals. The business later ventured into data scraping to collect and create its data.

Economists and analysts were recruited to gather necessary data to help the AI system forecast

upcoming trends in the labor market. Burning Glass created and sold access to three vital

dashboards, i.e., labor insight, program insight, and career insight. Corporate clients also used the

information obtained from the dashboards to determine whether their firms possessed the right

talent to keep at par with labor market trends.

Further technological advancements allowed Burning Glass to build models that served

all three market segments at once. Data would be collected, cleaned, and stored in a data lake

before being fed into a data pipeline, which supplied the data to various company units.

PittaRossa’s data wrangling techniques were quite simple and less advanced. To determine

prices, they utilized data collected from only four sources, i.e., stock keeping units, sales records,

discount events, and inventory. Burning Glass’ data-wrangling mechanisms were, indeed, more

developed with a lot of details, precision, and sophistication than those of PittaRossa.

Data wrangling approaches used by Burning Glass and PittaRosso exhibited a few

similarities. The AI systems in both institutions were fed with new combinations of inputs and

commands to give new and better predictions that addressed the prevailing challenges. The

techniques also considered fidelity (accuracy of data), insight (relevancy of utilized data to the

targeted situation), and actionability (the alignment of data gathered with how users made

decisions). Lastly, they exploited new data to update the AI system’s predictions and

recommendations. A crucial suggestion to the two organizations is adopting advanced data

profiling measures that would expose existing gaps. Inputs from the two firms did not include

core elements from the external environment, such as political and social factors. Although the

businesses mainly focus on increasing sales and quality of their commodities, their AI system

should also reveal the pending political and social implications, rendering the operations

profitable or unprofitable.
