a. Characters
The characters in a short
story are the people or
animals that the story
focuses on.
5 Types of character:
Protagonist – The
protagonist is the main
character in the story and
is often considered as the
"good guy”.
Antagonist – An
antagonist is a character in
a story who is presented
as the main enemy and
rival of the protagonist.
Flat or Static – A static or
flat character is one that
doesn't change from the
start of the story through to
the end.
Dynamic – A dynamic
character is one who
changes and evolves
throughout the story.
Round – A round
character refers to a
character in a fictional
work with depth or a
complex personality.
b. Settings
The setting of a short story
includes when and where
the short story takes place.
The setting in a short story
is usually different than the
setting described in a
novel because of the
length of the work.
c. Plot
The plot of a story is made
up of sequence of events
that happened in the story.
5 Parts of the Plot:
1. Exposition – It is where
the story begins and
provides background
information of the setting
and the character details.
2. Rising action – It is the
part of the story where the
"plot thickens". Challenges
and conflicts are
introduced.
3. Climax – This is the
turning point of the story,
tensions in the plotline
come to a head.
4. Falling action – this
segment is brief but maybe
necessary to conclude the
key scenes that occurred
in the climax.
5. Resolution – It is the end
of the story. It focuses on
how the conflict is
ultimately resolved.

The conflict in a short story
includes the problems or
things that go wrong. Short
stories generally have just
one conflict, or struggle,
that the main character
experiences.
Main Types of Conflict:
1. Protagonist vs.
Antagonist
2. Protagonist vs.
Nature
3. Protagonist vs. Self
4. Protagonist vs.
Society
e. Theme
The theme of a story is the
central idea of the story. It
is the main message that
the story is trying to get
across.
4. Generalization (The teacher will review what was
discussed by asking) (One of the students will answer)

in the afternoon, I can also be a
sunny day”

“I am the witch in Snow White, the CONFLICT
wolf in Little Red Riding Hood, I
