3. The following diagram is the structure of an atom. [8 marks]

(a) Label the diagram. [5 marks]

(b) Consider the charge of different particles in an atom.

Explain why an atom has no overall charge, which mean electrically neutral. [3 marks]
The relative charge of protons is +1 while the relative charge of electron is -1 @1+1
As the number of protons is equal to the number of electron in an atom. @1
Therefore an atom is electrically neutral.

4. Complete the following table. [10 marks] (2 marks per element: symbol @1, deduct 0.5 for wrong no.)

SECTION (B) STRUCTURAL QUESTIONS [20 marks]

5. The following table gives data for some elements. [7 marks]
Elemen
Melting point (C) Boiling point (°C) Electrical conductivity appearance
t
A 7 58 poor reddish-brown
B 1083 2600 good Shiny, silvery
C 630 903 good shiny
D 219 183 poor colourless
E 98 890 good shiny
F 114 184 poor dull

(a) Which of the above elements is/are gas(es) at room temperature ? [1 mark]
D

(b) Which of the above elements is/are metal(s)? [1 mark]

B, C, E

(c) State TWO properties of metals. [2 marks]

They are good conductors of heat (or electricity)./ They are malleable and ductile.
They have a shiny appearance./ High melting point and boiling point compared with non-metal.

(d) (Bonus) A student stated that if a solid could conduct electricity, it must be a metal.
Comment on the statement, with example. [3 marks]
The statement is incorrect. @1
Graphite (a form of carbon) is a solid non-metal that can conduct electricity. @1+1/ (Silicon)

6. Read the following article and answer the questions. [4 marks]
Radiocarbon dating
Radiocarbon dating (Carbon-14 dating) is a method for determining the age of an object by using the
properties of radiocarbon, Carbon-14 (14 C), a radioactive carbon. The older a sample is, the less 14 C
6 6

there is to be detected, and because the half-life of 14 C (the period of time after which half of a given
6
sample will have decayed) is about 5,730 years, the oldest dates that can be reliably measured by this
process date to around 50,000 years ago.

(a) Compare 12C and 14 C in terms of number of protons and number of neutrons. [2 marks]
6 6

(b) Do you think 12C and 14 C have the same chemical properties? Explain your answer. [2 marks]
6 6
S.3/Chemistry//P.6

Yes, this is because they are same kind of atom (or element). / @1+1
Yes, they have same number of protons (or electrons) in their atom. @1+1
