York is a city in the north of England with a very interesting history. It started with the
Romans nearly 2,000 years ago, and it became an important centre during the Roman
Empire. When the Vikings captured the city in the ninth century, they renamed it Jorvik,
and, much later, King Richard II actually made York the capital of England. These days,
York is much more peaceful. It is an easy and attractive city to get around, as the centre
is surrounded by walls that you can walk along. It has lots of beautiful old buildings, such
as York Minster, and many interesting museums. One of these, the National Railway
Museum, has the finest collection of railway engines and carriages in the country.
