Year 10 – Chapter 1 – Measurement of Physical Quantities

Name: ___________________ Class: ________________ Date: ______________

Determine the net force (resultant force) for each case, complete with its magnitude and
direction.

4 N to the left 7 N – 2 N = 5 N to the left

4 N – 4 N = 0 N, no movement 6 N + 3 N = 9 N to the right

8 N – 4 N =4 N to the left 5 N – 4 N = 1 N to the left

3 N + 3 N = 6 N to the left (2+4) N – 5 N = 1 N to the right

6 N – 3 N = 3 N to the left (4+4) N – 7 N = 1 N to the right

11. A boy pulls a wagon with a force of 6 N east as another boy pushes it with a force of 4N
east. What is the net force?

6 N + 4 N = 10 N to the east

12. The classes are playing tug of war. Mrs. Johnson’s homeroom pulls with a force of 50 N.
Ms. Mitchell’s homeroom pulls with a force of 45 N in the opposite direction. What is the net
force? And who won?

50 N – 45 N = 10 N towards Mrs. Johnsons’s side

Net force = 10 N

Winner: Mrs. Johnson’s homeroom

13. For each situation, calculate the net force (magnitude) acting upon the object and its
direction

a) i) Calculation method (Pythagoras’ Theorem)

Resultant force = √ 82 +32 N

= 8.544 N Magnitude = 8.544 N

tan θ = 8/3 θ = 69.44° Direction = 69.44° above the

horizontal line

ii) Drawing a Parallelogram method

Scale: 1 cm : 1 N

Measure length of diagonal line = 8.54 cm

Since 1 cm : 1 N,
Resultant force = 8.54 N

Measure angle using a protractor,

θ = 69.44°
Magnitude = 8.54 N θ
Direction = 69.44° above the horizontal line

b) i) Calculation method (Pythagoras’ Theorem)

Resultant force = √ 1002 +802 N

= 128.06 N
Magnitude = 128.06 N
tan θ = 80/100 θ = 38.60°
Direction = 38.60 below the
horizontal line

ii) Drawing a Parallelogram method

Scale: 1 cm : 10 N θ

Measure length of diagonal line = 12.806 cm

Since 1 cm : 10 N,
Resultant force = 128.06 N

Measure angle using a protractor,

θ = 38.60°
Magnitude = 128.06 N

Direction = 38.60° below the horizontal line
