MY MOTHER AT SIXTY SIX:

When 2 things are compared using like or as the poetic device is 'SIMILI'

Here the poet uses "HER FACE ASHEN LIKE THAT OF A CORPSE" the poet
compares her mother's face to that of a corpse.

·0 ashen - colourless as ahes, or the poet's mother's face was as dull or

as colourless as ash.

·1 doze - little sleep ( jhapki)

·2 young trees sprinting - represent path of lfe or way of life. how quickly
our life changes from being a child into adult and suddenly into old
age. the poet sees in her mother on how she rembers her being young
and tody realizing how her mother is getting old and might not be with
her one day. She realizes this and quickly tries to remove this thought
from her head ( represented by ( SHE WAS AS OLD AS SHE LOOKED
BUT SOON PUT THAT THOUGHT AWAY ).

·3 mery children spilling - metaphor and imagery. Mery children represent

happy children.

·4 i looked again at her wan and pale - the poet looks at her mother for
the last time before entring the airport and sees her mother dull and
pale which could be because of saddness or disease. and compared
her mother's face to late winter's moon in which late shows night ,
winter shows end and moon also shows night, which basically means
death or end. the poet sees a late winter's moon in her mother's face
or sees an end in her mother and feels a similar pain which she has felt
before in her childhood which is the childhood fear of her losing her
mother.( a famaliar ache , my childhoos's fear )

·5 use of 'smile' three times shows how hollow the smile was. here
repetition is being used

The final part of the poen shows how the poet has lost againt her
responsibilities as an adult. She wants to stay with her parents but cannot due
to her job and work. All she could give them in the end was a big hollow smile
and promises them to see them soon which is ironic because the poet herself
does not know when she is going to see her mother again.

KEEPING QUIET ( PABLO NERUDA )

peple would looks at themselves and realise what they have done.
