“In a lush green site, Void can be spotted only in a fleeting glimpse.”

Design Ideology
This humble east-facing house is heavily shaded and
holds courtyards within to facilitate the free flow of
air across the site. Porosity is maintained at all sides to
ensure easy flow into the residence. Void derives its
name from this porosity.

Site Plan and Layout

The planning concerts with the site, explicitly protecting
maximum trees within this green landscape. Developed on a
site hosting an existing house, Void truly reflects the ideology of
design that follows the occupants lifestyle. A long linear pathway
leads to the rear part of the site where the house is located. Lush
vegetation in the site provides privacy from the neighbouring
houses and a paddy field in the rear side provides long and wide
panoramic views.

Inside the house, the courtyards are strategically placed to

accompany every living space. The living spaces are segregated
on both floors to provide for privacy while maintaining
connectivity.

Entrance Foyer
A long driveway surrounded by lush vegetation leads
one towards the entrance foyer which has a koi fish
pond on one side and a planter box on the other. Both
these aesthetic elements sit before walls of terracotta
jaalis that help guide cool air into the interior spaces as
well as form natural backdrops at the entrance foyer.
The entrance foyer itself is a large verandah where
everyone can gather and spend leisure time.

Guest Living Room

Upon entry to the house, one is amazed by the grandeur of
the interior spaces. One is welcomed into a well-lit guest living
area with courtyards abutting it on the southern as well as the
northern side of the house. Bright colors on the fabrics combine
with wooden surfaces to form a lively space for the guests. A
wooden partition separates this space from the internal spaces.

Main Central Courtyard

The pooja is poetically placed at the center of the house to
capture the vision of an onlooker while entering. The point of
convergence from all angles of the ground floor, this space is
positioned within a sky-lit internal courtyard, which allows light
to flood throughout the building. The sense of divine lighting in
conjunction with the courtyards at both ends of the residence
creates a tranquil setting.

Dining Space
A double-height dining is deliberately placed next to a
courtyard so that it would extend into a tea lounge for an
evening get together. On the other side of the dining, an open
kitchen aids for easy communication with the user. The wash
basin too is set next to an external courtyard. Grey textured
walls along with grey stone flooring highlight this central space.

Kitchen
An open kitchen was designed to aid the occupant
for easy interaction and connectivity throughout the
house. A minimalist design including white and wooden
surfaces make this space easy to use and maintain in
the long run.

Parents Bedroom
The parents bedroom is designed to be minimalistic
and highly functional. It provides easy access to all
other spaces on the ground floor. Multiple windows are
placed strategically to aid active ventilation and bring
in light from all sides.

Family Living Room

Separated from the central area, the family living area is located at
the south western end of the house, adjacent to a linear double-
height courtyard with patterned jaalis. The light coming in from
the jaalis create interesting patterns in the room. Bright fabric
colors and wooden surfaces adorn this space that becomes an
extension to the master bedroom on the ground floor making it a
suite room.

Master Bedroom
The master bedroom adjacent to the family living room share each
others courtyard. Light permeates through the patterned jhallis
of the house idling through. Dynamic shadows adorn the interiors
with their patterning. The bed back is designed to have natural
wooden surfaces with metal inlays to form a minimalistic design.
The theme of grey and wood continues into the walk-in wardrobe
and the attached toilet too.

Library
A library on the first floor becomes a space for leisure
and gathering for the family. The south-western
courtyard continues onto the first floor bringing in
patterned light from the jaalis. The transparency of the
staircase railing help in providing clear views to the
spaces downstairs.

One of the daughters bedroom is placed right next to the
library. They share the south western courtyard that keeps them
connected. Grey textured walls and grey stone flooring become
the backdrop to the bright fabrics and wooden surfaces. A large
window opens into the central courtyard that helps maintain
connectivity with the floor below.

North Side Elevation

The north side elevation is the front of the house. Frames are
created from the elements used to at different levels. The
verandah in the front followed by the terracotta jaalis and further
the balconies on the first floor. The single slope of the house
further reduces the overall temperature within interiors. The
underside of the roof is clad with HPL sheets in wooden finishes.
VOID | I2A architetcs 41

East Side Elevation

The east side elevation helps us understand the layers of the
elevation better. The sides are kept fairly minimal with minimum
openings for privacy. The sloping roof approach maximizes air
circulation and minimizes the use of artificial lighting and air
conditioning, making it the most ideal and ecologically sensitive
abode.
VOID | I2A architetcs 43

Conclusion
The design, from planning to interiors insists on a single
idea of blurring the boundaries between interiors and
exteriors, fostering a reciprocal relationship with the
landscape it accommodates.
