1. Checks doctor's order for suctioning
2. Obtains assessment of cardiopulmonary function and determines the
need for suctioning
3. Washes hands before and after the procedure.
4. Prepares and assembles needed equipment at bedside.
5. Keeps client warm and position appropriately:
Immediately after Delivery:
5.1. Positions the airway with the head slightly lower than the body or in
Trendelenburg position
6. Places towel under the chin or across the chest
7. Wears clean gloves.
8. Suctions first the mouth and then the nose.
Using the Bulb syringe:
8.1 Compresses the bulb of the syringe before inserting the tip in the
newborn's mouth
8.2 Inserts 1-1.5 inches of the tip of the syringe into the mouth and/or 0.5
inch into each nostril then releases the bulb to aspirate.
8.3 Removes the bulb syringe and compresses the bulb expressing the
contents into the basin.
8.4 Repeats procedure for 2-3 times or until clear.
Using Suction Catheters:
8.5 Attaches appropriate catheter size to suction tubing
8.6 Turns on the suction machine on its appropriate pressure.
8.7 Moistens the catheter by dipping it into the container of sterile water into
the container of sterile water and test by placing thumb over the port.
8.8 Inserts suction catheter along the sides of the mouthfor 5cms. With the
dominant hand.
8.9 Applies suction intermittently by occluding the Y-port of the catheter
with the thumb of your non-dominant hand and withdraws the tube in a
rotating motion. Limits attempts to 3-5 seconds.
8.10 Flushes the catheter with sterile water.
8.11 Turns off suction machine after the procedure.
8.12 Pulls one glove downward over the other glove, enclosing it for
disposal
8.13 Auscultates chest to evaluate breath sounds
8.14 Washes hands and do after care.
8.15 Documents the time,nature and amount of secretions.
