II. BACKGROUND INFORMATION/ SITUATION ANALYSIS

Our school is presently operating the Open High School Program (OHSP) to cater learners
who are willing to 62 students enrolled under the OHSP. However, while progress is
undoubtedly clear in this program, our school still faces difficulty in achieving the best result
mainly because of the insufficiency of materials to support the learners. Conjointly, the lack
of knowledge of the teachers about the program has an unsatisfactory effect to it.
In this connection, the coordinator of the OHSP is proposing the project “One Stop-Step Up”
which will help the program become more systematic. The coordinator will be the solitary
distributor of the modules so as not to create confusion to the learners. This will be
advantageous to the subject teacher, the learner and the coordinator because everyone can
closely monitor the progress of the child. Moreover, this method will help lessen the
learners’ time in collecting their modules. We put system to the program, we bring the
learners one step up to their dream.

III. OBJECTIVES

The “One Stop-Step Up” aims to develop a system that will help organize the Open High
School Program for the Learners’ progress.

II. BACKGROUND INFORMATION/ SITUATION ANALYSIS

Reading is a complex cognitive process of decoding symbols in order to construct or derive

meaning. It is a means of language acquisition, of communication, and of sharing
information and ideas. Like all language, it is a complex interaction between the text and the
reader which is shaped by the reader’s prior knowledge, experiences, attitude, and language
community which is culturally and socially situated.
More than someone’s capacity to read is the ability to comprehend what was read. This will
open the doors towards all areas of knowledge the world would ever share. The reading and
comprehension requires continuous practice, development, and refinement. In addition,
reading requires creativity and critical analysis.
In connection to this, the Reader’s Club, joining hands with the English Club of Jesus F.
Magsaysay High School, being alarmed by the Phil-IRI test results and the least learned
competency in the previous National Achievement Test (NAT) which is noting details (which
merely requires reading comprehension), came up with the project “My Peer, also a Reader”
project.
To do this, Grade 7 and Grade 8 Phil-IRI tests results for the upcoming S.Y. 2016 – 2017 will
be consulted on choosing the participants of this project. Students who will be marked as
beginners will automatically be subjected to the said project. Meanwhile, students (Grade 7
– 10) who will be marked excellent in reading are the “peers” who will help on conducting
reading sessions and practices of the beginner readers.

III. OBJECTIVES

The “My Peer, also a Reader” aims to accomplish the following objectives:

a) Establish the reading level profile of students of Jesus F. Magsaysay High School through
Phil-IRI (Twice every School Year)
