Topic 2 – MOTIVATING STUDENTS

There are two types of motivation:

1. Intrinsic - internal; the best one - the students already have an interest in learning English.
2. Extrinsic - external; factors from the surroundings drive the student to learn English. Teachers could use it
to motivate students to achieve their goals.

Many factors influence students' motivation:

- class and curriculum structure;
- teacher personality;
- teaching methods;
- family issues;
- learning environments;
- assessment;

Class structure must be logical and well prepared lessons create a sense of security. Objectives must be
clear and realistic, because exaggerated aims frighten and discourage students.

Teacher personality - teachers must be kind and friendly to the students. Optimism and enthusiasm attract
and retain attention. Positive feedback encourages future participation.

Family issues - the lack of security at home lois motivation: divorce, loss of one or both parents, not having
contact with the parents, frequently moving from one home to another, long travel to school.

Learning environment - positive learning environment makes students feel safe if and protected. Too many
classes, too much work in class and too serious classes lower motivation. Time for fun, time for play, time for
socialising with teachers appeal to students.

Assessment - continuously too challenging tests lead to no sense of achievement. Continuously too low
marks discourage students.

There are many strategies to improve motivation:

- positive learning environment;
- be the role model for the students;
- develop logical lesson plans;
- give students opinions;
- appreciate students efforts;
