(THERAPHOSIDAE : ORNITHOCTONINAE)
Through the course of our research, we identified 18 possible new undescribed arboreal
Ornithoctoninae species (as of December 3, 2020) in the Philippines, based on reported records
and available specimens. Only Tree Tiger Tarantula species are known to occur in Philippines so
far ( as opposed to Earth Tigers which have fossorial lifestyle). I observed that they are distributed
all over the Greater Mindanao P.A.I.C. ( Mindanao + Eastern Visayas Islands)
The records below don't necessarily mean that they are verified different species. Difference in
locality and habitat are considered in separating each record. As soon as specimens are
completed, we will do cross-examination on them in order to identify the true diversity of
Philippine Tree Tiger Tarantulas.
Valid species = 1 species (Melognathus dromeus)
Possible undescribed = 18 species (as of 03-xii-2020)
To all hobbyists, please be guided to avoid interspecies breeding. The current common names
(sp. "South", sp. "Oriental" , sp. "Central" ) are discouraged to use since they are general terms
which may lead to confusion and hybridization.
