Cztery proste słowa, a sprawiają nam tak wiele problemów. Speak, talk, say oraz tell to słowa,
które na język polski możemy przetłumaczyć jako „mówić”. Niestety nie są one synonimami a w
związku z tym nie możemy używać ich zamiennie. Przyjrzyjmy się każdemu z nich osobno.

SPEAK (spoke - spoken)

Używamy do jednostronnej komunikacji (tzn. że nie prowadzimy z nikim dialogu, a raczej chcemy
komuś coś powiedzieć) oraz do sytuacji formalnych.

The Prime Minister spoke to the audience about the country’s current economic situation.
Premier mówił słuchaczom o obecnej sytuacji ekonomicznej kraju.

The teacher wanted to speak to Mike after class.

Nauczyciel chciał porozmawiać z Mikiem po lekcjach.
(zakładamy, że nauczyciel nie jest jego kolegą i traktujemy to jako sytuację dosyć formalną)

Speak użyjemy również, gdy odnosimy się sposobu w jaki mówimy, języka, którym się
posługujemy oraz gdy rozmawiamy przez telefon.

Speak quietly. The baby is sleeping.

Mów po cichu. Dziecko śpi.

Tamara is a polyglot. She speaks French, English, German, Spanish and Chinese fluently.
Tamara jest poliglotką. Mówi płynnie po francusku, angielsku, niemiecku, hiszpańsku i chińsku.

TALK (talked - talked)

Różnica pomiędzy słowem talk a słowem speak nie jest duża. Warto natomiast pamiętać, że
tego pierwszego użyjemy mówiąc o dwustronnej komunikacji (tym razem mamy dwoje
rozmówców prowadzących ze sobą dialog, wymieniających się spostrzeżeniami); lub do
komunikacji nieformalnej.

Susan and Tom were talking about various different things for several hours so I think that this
date must have been great.
Susan i Tom rozmawiali o wielu różnych rzeczach przez wiele godzin więc myślę, że randka była
naprawdę udana.

I need to talk to you about something.

Muszę z Tobą o czymś porozmawiać.

Talk to vs Talk with

Nasze ukochane prepositions . Napewno spotkaliście się zarówno ze zwrotem talk to sb jak i
talk with sb. Różnica między nimi jest dosyć prosta do wyłapania. Talk to sb to „mówić do
kogoś”, natomiast talk with sb to „rozmawiać z kimś”.

Have you already talked with her about this issue?

Rozmawiałaś już z nią o tej sprawie?

Let me talk to him!

Pozwól mi z nim porozmawiać! ( prawdopodobniej chcemy mu coś powiedzieć)

SAY (said - said)

Say stosujemy, gdy chcemy o czymś powiedzieć, niekoniecznie mówiąc to do konkretnej osoby.
Używając czasownika say pamiętajcie by nigdy nie użyć po nim osoby jako waszego
dopełnienia. Co to znaczy? To znaczy tyle, że po czasowniku say zawsze musicie powiedzieć co
(say sth) chcecie powiedzieć a nie komu (NOT: say sb). Jeśli chcecie wyrazić do kogo
adresowana jest wasza wypowiedź musimy po say sth użyć to a dopiero póżniej dodać osobę
(say sth to sb).

Tell me what she said to you.

Powiedz mi, co Ci powiedziała.

She wanted to say something but she forgot.

Chciała coś powiedzieć, ale zapomniała.

Najczęściej jednak możemy się spotkać z konstrukcją: Sb say that …

Powiedziała, że była naprawdę dumna ze swoich osiągnięć.

Tom says that this kind of music is no longer listened to.

Tom mówi, że już nie słucha się takiej muzyki.

Say używamy zarówno w mowie zależnej jak i niezależnej, oraz stronie biernej.

Tina says that she has a lot on her plate today.

Tina mówi, że ma dzisiaj dużo na głowie.

Tim Smith is said to be a very dangerous criminal.

Mówi się, że Tim Smith jest bardzo groźnym kryminalistą.

Pamiętajmy również, że say oznacza wypowiadanie słów.

Say ‚hello’ to this lady!

Powiedz ‚dzień dobry’ tej pani!

I can’t stand this silence. Say something!

Nie mogę znieść tej ciszy. Powiedz coś!

Warto również zapamiętać wyrażenia, z czasownikiem say.

- say something - powiedz coś

- say it right - powiedz to poprawnie
- say it all - powiedz wszystko
- Say hello/goodbye - przywitaj się/ pożegnaj się
- Say cheese! - powiedz „cheese”

TELL (told - told)

Tell stosujemy, gdy mówimy o przekazywaniu komuś informacji o czymś drogą ustną lub
pisemną.

I will tell you about this project later on.

Później opowiem Ci o tym projekcie.

Maria told her husband about her affair.

Maria powiedziała swojemu mężowi o zdradzie.

Please, tell me your name.

Proszę powiedz jak się nazywasz.

Podobnie jak w wypadku czasownika say, czasownik tell możemy używać zarówno w mowie
zależnej jak i w mowie niezależnej, oraz stronie biernej.

John told his friend that they have to get away for the weekend to unwind a bit.
John powiedział swojemu przyjacielowi, że muszą wyjechać na weekend, żeby trochę odpocząć.

The Smiths were told that they have to move to a different flat.
Powiedziano rodzinie Smith, że musza się przeprowadzić do innego mieszkania.

Jak zapewne zauważyłeś po tell musimy powiedzieć do kogo ta informacja została skierowana
(tell sb sth).
Stosujemy to słowo również aby kogoś poinstruować, doradzić mu lub kazać mu coś zrobić (tell
sb to do sth).

Monika told her children to tidy up their rooms.

Monika kazała dzieciom posprzątać ich pokoje./ Monika powiedziała dzieciom, żeby posprzątały
swoje pokoje.

The teacher told us to go outside and have fun.

Nauczyciel powiedział nam, żebyśmy wyszli na zewnątrz i pobawili się.

Tell him that you love him.

Powiedz mu, że go kochasz.

Tak, jak w przypadku say, tutaj również występują wyrażenia, których warto nauczyć się na
pamięć.
