WHAT IS COSMETOLOGY
This is the study and application if beauty treatment. Branches of speciality
includes: hairstyling,skin care, manicure/pedicure, cosmetics, waxing sugaring.

The Egyptians
The beginning of the use of cosmetics can first be seen in ancient egypts.
Egyptians were the first to pay attention to the human body and beautify it
in a grand scale. Looking beautiful was their priority. Cosmetics were worn
daily, at religious ceremonies, and it the preparation of the dead to the after
life.

Through archeological finds, Egyptians put makeup on their eyes, lips and
skin. The materials they used were made from minerals, berries, insects.
They color the hair and fingernails with rich warm and red henna stains.

Egyptians were also known to be the first to use kohl (lipstick)- made from
ground mix of a black mineral called galena,sulfur and animal fats. They
outlined their eyes heavily with the mixture, which prevents the eye from
inflammation such as conjunctivitis. Not only did the eyeliner accurate the
shape of the eye, it also function to protect the eyes from the bright sun.

THE ROMANS AND GREEKS

In Rome women coloured there hair various colors to denote their status in
society : the red hair was a sign of wealth,the middle class women dyed
their hair blonde, and the lower class coloured their hair black. A mineral
called cinnabar was ground to make vermillion a red pigment used to color
the lips.

The Romans standard of beauty set a precedent for many future


generations. Which are white pale skin, straight hair, large eyes and
eyelashes.

Both the Romans and Greeks used chalk dust powder and even white lead
to make their skin pale. Lead and arsenic were used cosmetics to make
women skin pale.

THE RENAISSANCE

The Renaissance: during this era women used powder made from
white lead to lighten their skin and a bit of mercury to make cheeks
look just rosy enough. Their hair were in different styles: braided,
curled,shaped,cut,colored etc. Renaissance men and women often
considered hair a signifier of order and civility

THE VICTORIAN ERA

The Victorian era also known as the 19th century. Many cosmetics products
with safer material than in the past but due to Queen Victoria’s guidelines
morals among the popularity of cosmetics decreased. Only women with
questionable morals, such as prostitutes, were some who can wear full
makeup.

20th and 21th Century

Wearing makeup was trendy and still is today in countries now. The movie
industry is a good example of how popular cosmetics is and celebrities
brought almost a major influence in defining what comprises of feminine
beauty. Women were spotted with the flawless, complexion beautiful
hairstyles and manicured nails.
