INTRODUCTION

Lipstick is a cosmetic which provides coulur, texture, protection to the lips. . The global
lipstick market is expected to be influenced by young female consumers' rising
awareness of beauty and personal care.

The history of lipsticks spans many periods and decades. Humans have had a desire to
stand out from other beings since prehistoric times. The initial ways were clothes,
shoes, and jewellery, followed by the invention of lipsticks and face paints.

Both men and women wore lipstick in the past. Lipstick is said to have been created by
Sumerians (3500 BC). They used natural resources like clay, fruits, henna, rust, and
even insects to extract the lip colours.

For the Egyptians, lipstick was a sign of sophistication and was only worn by royalty and
members of the upper class. Egyptian lipsticks were coloured with carmine dye, which
was made by grinding cochineal insects. Even now, lipsticks and other items include
carmine colour.

In contrast to the social significance of lipstick in Egypt, wearing lipstick was a sign of
prostitution for women in Greece.

The first solid lipstick was created by Arab scientist Abul Casis, a Muslim physician,
surgeon, and chemist, in 9 AD.
In the 16th century, England's Queen Elizabeth I popularised the pale appearance with
red lips. However, this appearance was only permitted for the actors, actresses, and
other performers who appeared on stage. Only actresses and prostitutes were given the
luxury of applying lipstick for the following three centuries.

Lipsticks in cylinder-shaped containers, which were practical and simple to carry, were
created by Maurice Levy in 1915. The application process was simplified because the
container lacked the swivel of modern ones.
The most common type was an indelible stain that lasted for a very long time and was
available as a salve, liquid, or stick. Another invention was natural lip gloss, which
utilised bromo acid to produce a reddish tint on the wearer's skin. Last but not least,
cherry-flavored lipstick was the most widely used flavour.

Despite the Great Depression, there was still a market for lipsticks. It was all about
elegance and matte finishes in the 1930s. Lip glosses quickly gained popularity after
being exclusively worn by Hollywood actresses.

People started to ask for the lipstick shades worn by their favourite actresses, such as
Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, etc., as they had more access to television and
photos.

The colors, formulations, and textures that are currently available for one lipstick are
astounding. Lipstick has changed from being a sign of elegance, prostitution, and
self-expression to an everyday item.

The unique characteristic of this sector is that it provides a huge variety of lipsticks, from
lipgloss, tints, matte, liner, and textures in a variety of shades.

The key participants in this sector are loreal, estee lauder companies, maybelline,
lakme, colorbar in india etc…
