Negotiation is a process in which 2 or more parties attempt to reach agreement on issues on which they have
differences. In negotiation 5 types of bargaining is possible
I. Productivity bargaining - Productivity bargaining involves both parties negotiating around productivity
and pay. It is the process of reaching an agreement (productivity agreement) through
collective bargaining whereby the employees of an organization agree to changes which are intended
to improve productivity in return for an increase in pay or other benefits

II. Composite bargaining - Composite bargaining refers to a negotiation that focuses on several elements
that are not related to pay. They are generally related to employee welfare and job security. For
instance, it covers factors such as working conditions, policies, recruitment, and disciplinary processes.
The aim is to ensure a mutually beneficial long-term relationship between the employer and employee.
It does this by highlighting issues that employees may have, which may impact their long-term future at
the company.

III. Concessionary bargaining - Concessionary bargaining is based on unions giving back previous benefits
to the employer. For instance, trade unions may agree to lower wages in return for job security. This
may come during an economic decline whereby job security is more important to the unions than higher
wages. Overall, this may actually benefit the company as they won’t have to pay for so many
redundancies and can keep workers on

IV. Distributive bargaining - Distributive bargaining is a competitive bargaining strategy in which one party
gains only if the other party loses something. It is used as a negotiation strategy to distribute fixed
resources such as money, resources, assets, etc. between both the parties. Distributive bargaining is
also known as zero-sum negotiations because the assets or the resources which need to be distributed
are fixed. So, all the negotiations will have to happen by taking that into context.

V. Integrative bargaining - Integrative bargaining (also called "interest-based bargaining," "win-

win bargaining") is a negotiation strategy in which parties collaborate to find a "win-win" solution to
their dispute. This strategy focuses on developing mutually beneficial agreements based on the interests
of the disputants. In terms of organizational behavior, integrative bargaining is preferable to distributive
bargaining because the former builds long term relationship and facilitates working together in the
future.
