POTENTIAL DIFFERENCE

LEARNING OUTCOMES
TO DEFINE POTENTIAL DIFFERENCE TO DESCRIBE THE RELATION BETWEEN PD AND
FLOW OF CURRENT.
PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE

• Q.Can current flow the circuit without any source?
REAL LIFE APPLICATION

• To drive and control charge motion (accelerate/decelerate/deflect charges

WHAT IS POTENTIAL DIFFERENCE?
• Definition :-The difference of electric potential between two points is called
• Potential difference.
• Potential difference across the two ends of a conductor causes the dissipation of electrical energy into other
forms of energy as charges flow through the circuit.

SI unit of potential difference is volt. ( V)

Potential difference is 1 volt if 1 joule energy is needed to move a charge of 1
Coulomb.
• Explanation
• When one point A of conductor is connected to positive terminal and other end B is connected to the
negative terminal of battery, then potential A becomes higher potential and B becomes lower potential.
EXPLANATION

• Current continuously flow till the time there is potential difference.

• Potential difference can be provide by battery.
• It can be measured by using voltmeter.
• When current flows through the conductor, it experiences a
• resistance which can be overcome by the battery in circuit.
and is dissipated as heat and other forms of energy. The dissipation of this energy is
accounted for by the potential difference across the two ends of the light bulb
TASK

• 1.The battery has two different potentials. why?

• 2. Connect the battery of 1.5 volt in the circuit and check reading on voltmeter by using
a bulb.
• 3. Connect the battery of 3 volt in the circuit and check reading on voltmeter by using a
bulb.
• 4.What will happen if we connect voltmeter in series instead of parallel?
