2B - BC REDOX TITRATIONS – SAMPLE PROBLEMS NOV.30, 2021

1.

2 MnO4 - + 5 C2 O4 2- + 16 H+ = 2 Mn 2+ + 10 CO2 + 8 H2 O

Sodium oxalate crystals (0.1234 g, MM=134) required 15.67 mL of KMnO 4 solution to titrate. Find the
molarity of the titrant.

2. A sample containing Fe2+ (MM=55.85) was acidified and treated with 0.0206 M KMnO4 according to this
redox reaction: 5 Fe2+ + MnO4- + 8 H+ = 5 Fe3+ + Mn2+ + 4 H2O

Calculate for milligrams of Fe contained in the sample

3. A solution of sodium thiosulfate was standardized by dissolving 0.1210 g KIO3 (MM=214) in water,
adding a large excess of KI, and acidifying with HCl. The liberated iodine required 41.64 mL of the
thiosulfate to decolorize the starch/iodine complex. Calculate the molarity of the Na2S2O3.

4. A 0.1017 g sample of KBrO3 (MM=166.1) was dissolved in dilute HCl and treated with an unmeasured
excess of KI. The liberated iodine required 39.75 mL of Na2S2O3. Calculate the molar concentration of
sodium thiosulfate.

1 mol BrO3 - = 3 mol I2 = 6 mol S2O3 2-

5. Tetraethyl lead, Pb(C2H5 )4, in a 25.00 mL sample of jet fuel was shaken with 15.00 mL of 0.02095 M I2 .
The reaction is: Pb(C2H5 )4 + I2 = Pb(C2H5 )3I + C2H5I

After the reaction was complete, the unused I2 was titrated with 6.09 mL of 0.03465 M Na2S2O3. Calculate
the %w/v, in kg/L, of Pb (C2H5 )4 (MM=323.4) contained in the sample.
