ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS [Total marks – 75]

Question 1.

The switch in the circuit in Figure 1 has been closed for a long time. It is opened at t =
0.

(a) Find the initial value of the inductor current i0 just before the switch is opened. (8
pts)
(b) Find the inductor current i(t) for t > 0. (7 pts)

Figure 1

Solution:
a) t<0

Perform source transformation on the left and replace inductor with short and 16Ω
resistor falls away

Using nodal analysis:

10−v v v
= +
2 12 4

10v= 60
V=6V then io= 6/4= 1.5A

b) for t>0 the switch is opened

Req= 4+12||16 =8Ω

Ϯ= L/R= 4/8 = ½

Therefore i(t) = 1.5𝑒 −2𝑡 A

Question 2.

The switch in the circuit in Figure 2 has been closed for a long time. It is opened at t =
0.

a) Find the initial value of the capacitor voltage v(0+) just before the switch is opened.
(5 pts)
(b) Find the capacitor voltage v (t) for t > 0. (10 pts)

Figure 2
Solution:
a)

T<0 capacitor will act as an open circuit

Find the total resistance on the right

40
Vc = (80) = 40V
40+40

b) For t > 0, the switch is opened and we have the following

Req = 30+50||80 = 40Ω

Ϯ =RC= 40(0.1) = 4s
Therefore v(t) = 40𝑒 −0.25𝑡 V

Question 3.

In the circuit in Figure 3, the op-amp is ideal.

Find the output voltage v0. (10 pts)

Figure 3

Solution:
Assumptions: v- =v+
I-=i+=0

Node v1-:

V1 V0−V1
=
1k 3k

V1=V0/4 …(1)

Node V1+

0.2−v1 v1−Vo v1
= +
1k 6k 2k

1.2 = 10V1 –Vo ….(2)

Substitute 1 into 2
1.2 = 10(Vo/4)-Vo
4.8 = 6Vo
Vo = 0.8V

Question 4.

For the entire circuit in Fig. 4, calculate:

(a) The power factor [8]
(b) The true power [4]
(c) The reactive power [3]

Figure 4
Solution:

a) Zeq = (4-j2) + j9||12

108 108
= (4-j2) + +𝑗
25 25

208 94
= +𝑗
25 25
=9.13∟24.32ᶱΩ

PF = Cos (24.32) =0.911 or R/Z = 8.32/9.13=0.911

120∟30
b) Irms =
9.13∟24,32
=13.14∟5.68ᶱA

True power = 𝐼𝑟𝑚𝑠 2 R = (13.14)2 (8.32) =1436.528W

or VrmsIrms Cos(ᶱv-ᶱi)=120(13.14)Cos(30-5.68)=1436.8W

c) Reactive Power = = 𝐼𝑟𝑚𝑠 2 X = (13.14)2 (3.76) = 649.2VAR or

120x13.14Sin(30-5.68) = 649.38VAR
