Description of Units

Note: The number of class periods is intended as a rough estimate. The weighting may not represent the Lessons
relative emphasis for testing purposes on the final assessment.

Linear Systems
Students will solve a system of linear equations using a variety of strategies and solve problems that are 12
modeled by systems of linear equations. They will describe the relationship between the number of
solutions to a system of linear equations and the coefficients of the equations.
Analytic Geometry
Students will use coordinates to determine and solve problems involving midpoints, slopes and lengths of 13
line segments. They will determine the equation of a circle with center at the origin. Students will use
properties of line segments to identify geometric figures and verify their properties.
Quadratic Models
Students will investigate the standard, factored and vertex forms of a quadratic relation and connect these 11
to the graphs of quadratic relations. They will be able to use transformations of vertex form in order to
graph the models. They will apply these quadratic models to solve problems.
Quadratic Relations
Students will investigate connections among the different forms of a quadratic relation and use the varying 10
forms to solve problems. Further, they will be able to convert between the forms of a quadratic model. by
factoring, expanding, and completing the square.
Quadratic Equations
Students will solve quadratic equations by factoring and by using the quadratic formula. They will use the 10
discriminant to determine the number of solutions for a quadratic equation. They will solve and model
problems involving quadratic equations in standard, factored and vertex forms.
Similar Triangles and Right Triangle Trigonometry
Students will determine and compare properties of congruent and similar triangles in order to solve 10
problems. They will determine side lengths and angle measures in right triangles using the primary
trigonometric ratios and use these skills to solve problems.
Acute Triangle Trigonometry
Students will develop and use the sine law and cosine law to determine side lengths and angle measures in
acute triangles. They will solve problems that can be modeled using acute triangles. 9
Review and Culminating Assessments
Students will complete in-class review activities as well as review homework to consolidate the learning 7
from the semester in preparation for final evaluations. Students will write the final summative evaluations
during the regular math period towards the end of the semester. The final exam will be written during the
examination period at the end of the semester.

Equipment Required
Students are expected to come prepared with all necessary materials on a daily basis. The following items are
needed by each student EVERY DAY.
● Scientific Calculator (phones and other electronic devices are NOT permitted for use as a calculator)
● A binder with 8 dividers (to be used only for this class)
● Lined paper
● Graph paper
● Ruler
● Pencils and eraser
● Highlighters and/or pencil crayons

Attendance
When absences are unavoidable it is important that students proactively catch up on any missing notes,
homework and assignments. Attendance is crucial to ensure success in this math course. Absences must be
explained through the attendance office. Unauthorized absences will result in escalating consequences.
Numerous absences will be referred to administration.

Missed Assessments
Students are expected to write tests and make presentations on the scheduled date. Students must inform the
teacher of an absence due to illness or family emergency before the assessment and make arrangements with
the teacher for rescheduling the assessment. For any missed assessments due to an unauthorized reason a mark
of zero will be recorded. Where applicable, a formal procedure, endorsed by the administration, will be followed
that will give the student a final opportunity to write an assessment.

Extra Help
It is the responsibility of the student to make appointments with the teacher at least one day in advance.
Extra help is provided to students before school, during lunch, or after school as indicated by the teacher. It is the
responsibility of each student to have completed notes and attempted homework questions prior to attending
extra help sessions.

Participation and Attitude

Arrive on time for each class. Make an effort to keep up with the work and do well.
Ask questions! Don’t be afraid to take a risk.
Help others – and others will help you when you have a need.
If you have concerns about your progress in the course, you should discuss them with me right away.

Learning Skills and Work Habits

The development of learning skills and work habits is an integral part of a student’s learning. The table below provides
some examples of associated behaviours, which are designed to assist in the evaluation of each of the listed learning skills
and work habits. These skills are evaluated separately from the course grade and are reported separately on the report
card.
