Long time ago, there lived a man named Simon who knew a great deal about the stars. Simon
spent all his time watching the heavens and trying to find out more about them. All day long
he thought of nothing else. All night long he watched the sky. People called him star-gazer.

Often when people spoke to him, he did not hear them. He would hear only if they were
speaking about stars. He liked to talk of nothing else. He was so full of knowledge about them
that most of folk did not understand his conversation. He was very clever, but he was a bore.

One night, when the dark velvet sky was sprayed with the twinkle of a million of stars, the star-
gazer wandered along with his face turned rapturously towards the sky.

Suddenly the earth ended and Simon was inside a ditch. The ditch was quite deep and filthy.
He tried to climb out but could not.

'Help! Help!' he cried out in panic. 'Get me out of this ditch.'

A passer-by heard his cries and soon had him out. 'Good Sir', the man said to the sorrylooking
star-gazer, 'you are always watching the stars. Why don't you watch the ditches too? You clever
men know a great deal about remarkable things but know nothing at all about the simple things
