MAIN POINT 1 History of Cat Island in Tashirojima

SUB-POINT 1  First used as a penal colony during the Edo

period (1603-1898), Tashirojima become a silk
production site in the beginning of the Meiji Era
(1868-1912).
 The first cats where consequently brought from
the mainland at the same time as a pest control
measure againat mice, the natural predators of
silkworms.
 Over time, coastal fishing and aquaculture
became the main activities of this island that
does not seem to have changed very much and
it is still rural with only few urban amenities and
a timeless appearance.

MAIN POINT 2 How to get to Tashirojima Island

SUB-POINT 2  Tashirojima Island can be found in the Miyagi

Prefecture.
 It’s officially part of the city of Ishinomaki,
although it’s about 20 km offshore in the Pacific
Ocean and it’s very close to Ajishima Island.
 So if you’re heading to Tahirojima, you’ll need
to get a ferry from the terminal in Ishinomaki on
the Kyukitakami River and can be reached
easily if you have a Japan Rail Pass. After that,
you need to change to a local train run by
Japan Railways from Sendai to Ishinomaki and
you can walk like 10-25 minute or short taxi
ride to the Ajishima Line Chou ferry pier.
MAIN POINT 3 What to do on Tashirojima Island

SUB-POINT 3  You can go to camping resort with manga

theme on the south side of Tashirojima at
Manga Island.
 Each lodge features cat-theme artwork by
famous manga artist including Shotaro
Ishinomori.
 Second, you also can go to Cat Shrine on
Nekokamisama. It’s dedicate to a cat that died
accidentally when struck by a falling rock.
 Third, you can hike around Tashirojima
because this island only has 2 villages which is
Odomari and Nitoda, which are linked by
narrow roads and walking trails that criss-cross
Tashirojima.
