-The question " Ông đi đâu đấy?" appears at the beginning of the conversation, not for the
purpose of asking for a position but to open the conversation, or in other words, it’s a greeting.
This is the greeting habit of Vietnamese people. Therefore, it cannot be translated as "where are
you going" right at the beginning of the conversation.

- The sentence " Ông béo ra quá " is a sentence with a positive meaning, a compliment, pointing
in a good direction. In this context, if you use the phrase "You're so fat", the sentence becomes
rude and disrespectful to the other person. The sentence " You look very healthy " is reasonable
when it is a positive appearance compliment.

- If we translate the sentence “Sao ông gầy đi thế?” to mean "Why are you so skinny?" it would
be too rude, ungrateful, and scrutinizing others. In this context, the above translation is
reasonable because it is not rude and shows the speaker's concern for the other person.

- When translating the word " dời đô ", the translator not only simply added the word "move" but
also added a small comment in parentheses, because this passage is translated for foreigners, who
may have never had contact with Vietnamese history so I don't know where Thang Long citadel
is. Similarly, with “Hà Nội”, they don't know what city or where Hanoi is, so these words have
to be explaind for them to understand, because the purpose of translation is to help the reader
understand.

Exercise 3: Read the following text about dog thief in Vietnam and do the tasks

Nguyen Van Cuong, a Hanoian said “It's very difficult to raise a good and intelligent dog”. He
estimates he has lost about 10 animals over the years to professional dognappers. “If I had caught
the thief, I would've beaten him up!” But asked if he would ever eat his own dogs, Cuong, who
has deep-set eyes and a wispy goatee, shook his head fiercely. “If I want dog meat,” he said, “I
go to a restaurant.

-What is the tone of the author? (ironic or sympathetic with the dog owner)
