FIN401 - Weighted Average Cost of Capital (WACC) Template

WACC = (WE)(RE) + (WD)(RD)(1-Tax Rate) + (WP)(RP)

Note: If the ques ti on does n’t menti on a nythi ng a bout Preferred Sha res , s i mpl y excl ude the end of the formul a .

Where (WE) = Weight of Equity (WD) = Weight of Debt (WP) = Weight of Preferred

(RE) = Cost of Equity (RD) = Cost of Debt (RP) = Cost of Preferred

Step 1: Find the Weights (WE, WD, WP)

a) Market Value of Equity (MVE) = (Number of Shares Outstanding)(Stock Price)

Market Value of Debt (MVD) = (Number of Bonds Outstanding)(PV)
Market Value of Preferred (MVP) = (Number of Preferred Shares Outstanding)(Stock Price)

b) Firm Value (V) = MVE + MVD + MVP

WE = MVE / V
WD = MVD / V
WP = MVP / V

Step 2: Find the Costs of Capital (RE, RD, RP)

𝐷1
a) RE = +𝑔 OR RE = Rf + B(Erm – Rf)
𝑃0

b) RD is found using the TVM Function of your financial calculator

N = Years FV = 1000 PMT = (FV)(Coupon Rate) P/Y = 1 C/Y = 1 PV = Given

I = ? -> RD = I

Note: If the Bonds are semi-annual, then multiply N and I by 2, and divide PMT by 2.

c) RP = +𝑔
𝑃0

Step 3: Plug values into WACC formula and Solve.
