CONTENT 3.2 Understand a variety of LEARNING STANDARD 3.2.3 Guess the meaning of
STANDARD linear and non-linear print and unfamiliar words from clues
digital texts by using appropriate provided by other known words and
reading strategies by context
LEARNING By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to guess the meaning of at least seven words using clues
OBJECTIVES provided by other known words and by context.

ACTIVITY PRE - 1. Write electricity on the board and draw a circle around it.
LESSON
2. Brainstorm the uses of electricity with pupils.
3. Write pupils’ responses on the board in the form of a bubble map.
4. Activity 1:
A
a. Elicit different meanings of the word power, including as a synonym for electricity. (SB

DELIVER pg 9)
Y b. Write Power Cuts on the board.
c. Say Power makes machines work. A power cut is when the power stops.
d. Tell the pupils to look at the questions in Activity 1.
e. Pupils discuss the questions.
f. Ask for class agreement to encourage class participation. e.g. Do you agree with…?
What do you think? Hands up if you agree. etc

5. Activity 2:
a. Predicition skills: Tell pupils they can often predict what they are going to read about by
looking at the photos.
b. Ask questions to encourage prediction based on the pictures. e.g. What country does the
map show? Do you know which area is in red? etc.(refer to Teacher’s Book pg 22)
c. Pupils look at the text.
d. Ask: Why is the text in columns? Is there a heading? Who wrote the text? How does the
photo relate to the text?
e. Pupils analyse the text and decide the text type.

6. Activity 3:
a. Read the features out and explain the words if necessary.
b. Say A headline is the main title. A subheading is a smaller title. A quote is what
somebody said. A caption describes a photo.
c. The pupils read the article and find the newspaper features. Tell them to underline in
text.
d. The pupils report back to the class.
e. Play the audio if pupils need additional support. ( Audio 1.2)
POST - 9. Play Quick Memory game with the words from the vocabulary panel.
