STANDARD to a small or large group and experiences
LEARNING By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to narrate short stories about interrupted past activities
OBJECTIVES using when and/or while.

PRE - 1. Use the clock/clock face to show different times.

LESSON
2. Ask pupils to tell their partner what they were doing at that time yesterday/on
Saturday/etc.
3. Monitor and remind pupils of the use of past continuous if necessary.
4. Activity 1:
A
a. Introduce the pupils to the dictionary in the Pupil’s Book. (SB pg 134)
LESSON
DELIVER b. Read out examples sentence for each word.
Y c. Elicit a definition for the words.
d. The pupils check the definitions in the dictionary.
e. Then use the dictionary to give definitions in the following order to elicit the words:
emergency, experiment, smoke, fire drill, alarm, fire engine.

5. Activity 2:
a. Refer pupils to the picture and ask questions. (Activity 1 SB page 12, TB page 28)
b. Tell the pupils to listen out for the lessons Alice and Kit were in when they heard the
alarm.
c. Play the audio, then ask the pupils for their answers. (CD 1.3)
d. Play the audio again. Pause after each line and have the pupils listen and repeat.
e. Ask: Which word do we use before the past simple? Which word do we use before the
past continuous?
f. Divide the class into two, and have the pupils act out the dialogue with each half taking
one role. Then, they change roles.
g. Have the pupils read the dialogue in pairs.

POST - 9. Choose some pupils to tell their stories to the class.

LESSON
10. Have the class decide which story is most exciting/interesting/frightening etc.
11. If you have a large class or time is short, pairs could tell their stories in larger groups.
