III. Application/Activity

1. What are the current issues governing the use of language in public schools?
In many nations, the use of language in public schools is currently a sensitive topic. As
educators work to establish welcoming environments for different student groups, inclusive
language and cultural sensitivity are two major areas of concern. Language-related issues,
such as bilingual education and the place of English as a second language, are still up for
discussion. Additionally, continuing discussions concerning freedom of speech and the
parameters of appropriate language are common in educational environments, particularly
when it comes to touchy subjects. These problems highlight the delicate balancing act that
must be performed in order to sustain the values of free expression and intellectual dialogue
while fostering an inclusive and courteous learning environment.

2. What are the challenges in the implementation of these policies?

The Philippines faces a number of difficulties in putting language regulations into

practice. The nation's linguistic diversity—more than 170 languages are spoken
there—makes it challenging to construct a unified language strategy. Another barrier is the
conflict between supporting Filipino, the country's Tagalog-based national language, and
acknowledging regional languages as essential to cultural identity. The necessity to balance
bilingual education and a lack of resources for teacher training and materials in different
languages make it more difficult to implement policies. The Philippines faces major
challenges in promoting fair language education, including resistance to policy changes and
the need to eliminate historical language biases.

IV. Assessment

Choose one of the national language policies and discuss your stand on it.

President Corazon Aquino's 1988 Executive Order No. 335 emphasizes the need of
employing Filipinos in all official government communications and transactions. By
encouraging the use of a common language, this action attempted to promote a sense of
national identity and unity. It is a great project because it acknowledges the important role
that language plays in fostering communication and involvement in political matters among
persons who speak different regional languages.
The government may make sure that its programs and policies are more accessible to a
wider audience across the nation by adopting Filipino in official government
communications. Greater transparency and community participation in governmental actions
may result from this. Additionally, it is in favor of the promotion and preservation of the
Filipino language, which is crucial for maintaining cultural history and identity.
However, due to the country's linguistic diversity, there are obstacles to this executive
order's effective implementation. There may be opposition to the imposition of a single official
language because the nation is home to several regional languages and dialects. It is vital to
strike a balance between promoting Filipino and honoring and protecting regional tongues. To
guarantee successful adoption, sufficient resources, including translations and language
instruction, must be offered. Overall, notwithstanding the good intentions behind Executive
Order No. 335, its successful implementation hinges on a cautious and inclusive approach to
language policy that honors the Philippines' diverse linguistic heritage.
