THE SONG OF ROLAND

COMPREHENSION

1. Why did Roland say that Marsilla was treacherous?

• Roland accused Marsilla of treachery due to the Saracen king's deceitful actions,
which included feigning conversion to Christianity and then plotting an ambush
against the Frankish forces.

2. Why was Ganelon’s mission dangerous?

• Ganelon's mission was perilous because it involved traveling into enemy territory,
navigating a complex political situation, and being part of a treacherous conspiracy
with Marsilla. Moreover, his personal enmity with Roland added to the danger.

3. Why would getting rid of Roland cripple Charlemagne?

• The loss of Roland would have crippled Charlemagne because it not only meant the
death of a valiant warrior but also deeply affected the morale and leadership of the
Frankish forces, leading to a retaliatory campaign against the Saracens.

4. Would you say that Roland was a religious man?

• Roland was a devout Christian, and his faith played a significant role in his
character in "The Song of Roland."

5. Relate the death of Roland in your own words.

• In "The Song of Roland," Roland's death occurs during the Battle of Roncevaux
Pass, where he and his knights are overwhelmed by Saracen forces. Roland's decision
not to call for reinforcements, his heroic fight, and his eventual realization of the
missed opportunity to sound the horn culminate in his death. Despite his sacrifice,
his actions inspire Charlemagne's army to avenge their fallen comrades and defeat
the Saracens. Roland's death symbolizes unwavering loyalty and bravery.

WRITING ACTIVITY
Write a dialogue based on a scene when the French decide to send Ganelon as
emissary to Marsilla.

Charlemagne: [Speaking to his knights] My respected comrades, even though we've

been victorious against the Saracens, King Marsilla remains a threat. We need to
choose someone to go as our ambassador and discuss his surrender terms.

Roland: [Stepping forward] Let me, my lord, lead our troops and make sure King
Marsilla surrenders through force.

Oliver: [Interrupting] Roland, your bravery is well-known, but this situation calls for
diplomacy, not military action.

Charlemagne: [Agreeing with Oliver] Oliver is right. We need a skilled diplomat to

negotiate and achieve peace. [He looks at Ganelon] Ganelon, with your intelligence
and cunning, will you take on this mission?

Ganelon: [After a moment of thought] Your Majesty, I'm deeply honored by your
trust. I will represent our interests at King Marsilla's court and handle the
negotiations.
