INTRODUCTION TO THE TOPIC

➢ In Sri Lanka, areas such as Wattala, Muthurajawela,

Negombo lagoon, and the Aparekka region consist of
peatlands.

➢ The challenge is that peat is highly organic soil, susceptible

to shrinkage, settlement, and instability when subjected to
loading or environmental changes.

➢ Due to its low strength properties, it is difficult to do

constructions on natural peat

➢ But in nowadays with the increase of land use in Sri Lanka,
peatlands are also used for the constructions.

➢ In such situations, the soil stabilization method has been preferred

over the soil replacement method due to several factors.

➢ This method increases the strength values of peat making it suitable

for constructing foundation.
PROBLEM STATMENT
➢ As a solution to the problems occurring in peatlands, Rice Husk Ash (RHA) can be employed as a soil
stabilization material due to its pozzolanic characteristics

➢ But using only RHA makes it difficult to achieve high strength after peat stabilization.

➢ Therefore, to address this gap, lime is introduced in this research as an admixture that can enhance the
strength properties of peat
HOW LIME INCRESE THE STRENGTH PROPERTIES OF PEAT

➢ Rice husk ash is primarily composed of silica (SiO2) and mica

➢ lime is composed of CaCO3 which has cementitious properties

➢ During the soil stabilization process, these two composites react with each
other and form a water-insoluble gel known as calcium silicate

SiO2(s)+ CaCO3(aq) CaSiO3(s)+CO2(g)

➢ The pores in the peat are filled by this gel

➢ The strength of peat can be increased due to the low void ratio
OBJECTIVES.

The main objective

➢ Analyze the effect of lime on the further strength gain in RHA-stabilized peat.

Sub-Objectives

➢ Check the optimum lime ratio for peat stabilization based on the strength properties and
settlement.

➢ Combined the chemical and physical properties of lime and RHA to stabilize the peat.

➢ Model the mechanical behaviour of Peat+RHA+lime stabilized soil with a numerical analysis.
