Attempt all questions.

1. (a) Derive an expression for Fresnel reflectance from an interface of two non-magnetic media
having refractive indices of nr1 and nr2 respectively. Calculate the fraction of photons that are
reflected when light is incident normally from GaAs (refractive index of 3.66 at 300 K) at an
interface with air. Also calculate the incident angle for total internal reflection. Comment on the
change of the result if the light is emitted into a glass encapsulation of refractive index 1.5. (6)
(b) If the bandgap of GaAs is 1.43 eV at room temperature, compute the emission
wavelength. Derive the expression used for the computation. Evaluate the output power from a
n+p GaAs LED with an electron current of 1 mA and overall efficiency of 50%. (4)

2. (a) A lamp is operating at 727⁰C emitting radiation at 0.5 μm. Comment on the result for the
possibility of lasing action. Deduce the necessary relationship for the calculation. (5)

(b) Consider a GaAs laser cavity (refractive index of 3.66) in which the loss is determined by the
absorption coefficient and gain coefficient of 20 cm-1 and 80 cm-1 respectively. Find the condition
of the cavity dimension so that the lasing occurs utilizing the cavity. Deduce the necessary
conditions used. (5)

(c) The various lasing transitions in a He-Ne laser is shown below along with the characteristics:

Write a MATLAB code to compute the efficiencies at each wavelength and overall one.
Accordingly, comment on your results. (5)
