Sample Question #5

According to the Toulmin argument model, the following statement is a warrant: “Therefore,
drones are safe to operate in Ontario, as there are operational protocols in place.”

A. True
B. False

The answer to Question #5 is B. (false), because the statement in Question #5 shows the claim,
including the grounds, NOT the warrant.

The claim is “our company’s drones are safe to operate in Toronto,” and the grounds are “we
follow the correct Ontario protocols when we use them.” The warrant would be that drone
safety depends on the adherence to specific rules (protocols) for operation.

A warrant in Toulmin Logic refers to an assumption about what makes the grounds (also known
as evidence or data) relevant to the claim (the conclusion of the argument). A warrant can be
stated or implied.
