MEG 205 TUTORIAL 3 — EQUILIBRIUM OF RIGID BODIES (1)_ Two crates each of mass 350kg are placed as shown in the bed of a 1400kg pick- up truck. Figure QI. Determine the reactions at each of the 2 (a) rear wheels A (b) front wheels B. Repeat this if crate D is removed and the position of crate C is unchanged. (VM4.1/2) Ans: A = 6.065KN each, B= 4.23KN each. Repeat: A = 4,892KN each, B = 3.691KN each. (2) A 2100N tractor is used to lift 900N of gravel as shown in Figure Q2. Determine the reactions at each of the 2 rear wheels A and front wheels B. (VM4,3). Ans: A= 325N each, B = 1175N each. (3) For the beam and loading shown in Figure Q3, determine the reaction at A and the tension in cable BC. (VM4.4). Ans: A = 245N, Tac = 140N. (4) A hand truck is used to move two kegs each of mass 40kg as shown in Figure Q4. Neglecting the mass of the hand truck, determine the vertical force P which should be applied to the handle to maintain equilibrium when a = 35° and the corresponding reaction at each of the two wheels B. (VM4.7/8). Ans: P= 37.92N, B = 373.4N each, (5) Determine the reactions at A and B when a= 180mm in Figure Q5. (VM4.61). Ans: A= 400N, B= SOON at -53.13°. (6) The man in Figure Q6 is holding the 200N drum in equilibrium at the point (2, 1)m with a force parallel to the plane at the point of contact. If friction is negligible, determine the force exerted by the man. Ans: 141.4N. (7) A 2m rod of uniform cross section is held in equilibrium as shown in Figure Q7 with one end against a frictionless, vertical wall and the other end attached to a cord. Determine the length of the cord.
