5 American amusement parks became popular

14 recreational destinations in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

24 By the year 1900, one of the largest, most popular

32 destinations was Coney Island, New York. It featured

42 three parks filled with rides, shows, and food and gift

43 vendors.

53 Steeplechase Park was one of the grand parks of Coney

61 Island. It began somewhat modestly when the park’s

69 creator, George Tilyou, ordered a 125-foot-tall Ferris wheel

80 to be built, delivered, and put up on his Coney Island

88 property. This attraction featured twelve large cars that

97 held eighteen passengers each. It quickly became a hit

99 with vacationers.

108 Tilyou soon added new attractions to bring in more

117 eager visitors and, of course, their cash. These included

126 boat rides, pony rides, the Giant See-Saw, and the

128 Earthquake Stairway.

137 One of the park’s main attractions was the Steeplechase

145 Ride. It featured six 1,100-foot-long, parallel metal tracks,

154 along which wooden horses raced, pulled by gravity and

164 boosted by their momentum down, up, and around to a

166 finish line.

174 The popularity of amusement parks declined later in

184 the 1900s, yet the many rides of Steeplechase Park helped

191 it stay open well beyond the turn-of-the-century

195 amusement park golden age.
