Course Outcomes​:​ At the end of the course, the student will be able to
CO1: Understand the representation of discrete time signals and systems.
CO2: Explain the basic principles of discrete time signal processing.
CO3: Analyze the discrete/fast Fourier transform for signal processing.
CO4: Design and analyse the frequency response of FIR and IIR filters.
CO5: Understand the concepts of programmable DSPs.

UNIT- I 10 Lectures
INTRODUCTION TO DISCRETE TIME SIGNAL PROCESSING
Introduction to discrete time signals, review of signals and systems: discrete time complex
exponentials and other basic signals, analysis of discrete time linear time invariant systems,
frequency domain representation of discrete time signals and systems.
Introduction to discrete convolution, Impulse response and convolution sum, convolution of
Infinite sequences, circular shift and circular symmetry, periodic and​ ​circular convolution.
Learning Outcome: ​At the end of the unit, the student will be able to
1. Understand discrete time complex exponentials and other basic signals.(L2)
2. Analyze discrete-time linear time invariant systems (L4)
3. Analyze the discrete time signals and systems in frequency domain (L4)

UNIT- II 10 Lectures
TRANSFORM ANALYSIS OF SYSTEMS
Introduction to Discrete Time Fourier Transform (DTFT), Relation between Z-Transform and
DTFT, Inverse DTFT, Properties of DTFT.
Introduction to Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT), Inverse DFT (IDFT), Properties of DFT,
Relation between Z-Transform and DFT, Linear Convolution using DFT.
Introduction to Fast Fourier Transform, Decimation in time radix–2 FFT, Decimation in
frequency radix–2 FFT.
Learning Outcome: ​At the end of the unit, the student will be able to
1. Understand the properties of DTFT and DFT.(L2)
2. Formulate the relation between Z-Transform and DTFT,DFT.(L3)
3. Understand the concept of FFT and radix–2 FFT algorithms.(L2)

UNIT-III 10 Lectures
DESIGN OF INFINITE IMPULSE RESPONSE (IIR) FILTERS
Introduction, Analog filter approximations – Butterworth and Chebyshev, Design of IIR Digital
filters from analog filters by impulse invariant and bilinear transformation methods, frequency
transformations, and Basic structures of IIR filters.

2. Design the IIR filters​ ​by Impulse invariant and bilinear transformation methods.(L4)

UNIT-IV 10 Lectures
DESIGN OF FINITE IMPULSE RESPONSE (FIR) FILTERS
Introduction, Characteristics of FIR filters with linear phase, frequency response of linear phase
FIR filters, Design of FIR filters using windows (Rectangular, Triangular and Hanning), Basic
structures of FIR filters and Comparison of IIR & FIR filters.
Learning Outcome: ​At the end of the unit, the student will be able to
1. Analyze the Characteristics of FIR filters.(L4)
2. Design the FIR filters​ ​using windows.(L4)
3. Understand the basic structures of FIR filters.(L2)

UNIT-V 10 Lectures
INTRODUCTION TO DSP PROCESSORS
Introduction to programmable DSPs, Multiplier and Multiplier Accumulator (MAC) operation,
Multiple Access Memory, Very Long Instruction Word (VLIW) architecture, Pipelining.
Learning Outcome: ​At the end of the unit, the student will be able to
1. Understand the operation of MAC.(L2)
2. Understand the architecture of VLIW.(L2)
3. Analyze the concept of Pipelining.(L4)
