WHAT ABOUT "RED AND BLACK"? is a novel written by Stendhal and published in 1830. It is an
important and widely known literary work in French literature. The novel is set in early 19th century
France, in a period of social and political change. The story centers on the life of Julien Sorel, a young
man of humble origins who aspires to rise in society. The work deals with themes such as ambition,
love, class struggle, social hypocrisy and morality, and is considered a masterpiece of realistic and
psychological literature. Stendhal uses an introspective narrative that explores the thoughts and
emotions of the characters.

This novel is mainly about Julien Sorel, an intelligent and ambitious young man living in Verrières, a
small French village. Despite his peasant background, Julien dreams of escaping his environment and
achieve a higher social status, so he meets Mathilde, however, he meets Madame de Renal, as it was a
person with a lot of money but is involved in political issues, then comes to have problems and have
trial for murder, as it is the cause of his ambition to get out of poverty, we also see that reflects the
reality of society today.

One of the most important aspects of this novel is Julien Sorel's ambition to rise in society. His desire to
leave behind his humble origins and gain access to the social elite leads him to perform acts that are
both admirable and morally questionable, and it is also reflected in our environment, because we have
seen cases of very ambitious people who fail to go down the right path and end their lives badly.

In my opinion, this novel is fantastic and interesting for any reader, because it deals with the class
struggle and personal ambition, it also makes us reflect on our own desires, ambitions and the way we
interact with the society around us and that if we want to have a successful life we must always go the
right way, because if we go the wrong way we will go wrong in our life and I think it is a basic rule of life
today. Finally, I would make a recommendation would be that the novel is a little more interactive also
for children, so that they can get used to the reality of life and that in order to achieve our things is
based on effort and dedication.
