Story about man visiting his sick mother in hospital.

Text: 2 Kings 4:38-41 NKJV And Elisha returned to Gilgal, and there was a famine in the land. Now the sons of
the prophets were sitting before him; and he said to his servant, “Put on the large pot, and boil stew for the
sons of the prophets.” 39 So one went out into the field to gather herbs, and found a wild vine, and gathered
from it a lapful of wild gourds, and came and sliced them into the pot of stew, though they did not know what
they were. 40 Then they served it to the men to eat. Now it happened, as they were eating the stew, that they
cried out and said, “Man of God, there is death in the pot!” And they could not eat it. 41 So he said, “Then bring
some flour.” And he put it into the pot, and said, “Serve it to the people, that they may eat.” And there was
nothing harmful in the pot.

Title: Poison in the pot

Preached Sun pm 22/10/23 – Buka LHC

POINT 1: A DESPERATE REALITY

A. Have you ever been in a desperate situation before?

1. In need of healing? In need of financial help? Marriage needs a miracle?
a. In life “desperate times call for desperate measures.”
2. Maybe today you’re in a desperate situation?
a. It’s in these desperate moments you have to decide “what am I going to do?”
b. Quote: “When you reach the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on” ― Abraham Lincoln
c. Your response is critical - Quit? or hold on? Trust in Jesus or do your own thing? Live by faith or by
feelings?
3. In Mark 5:25-34 Story of a woman who was in a desperate condition:
Mark 5:25-34 NKJV Now a certain woman had a flow of blood for twelve years, 26 and had suffered
many things from many physicians. She had spent all that she had and was no better, but rather
grew worse. 27 When she heard about Jesus, she came behind Him in the crowd and touched His
garment. 28 For she said, “If only I may touch His clothes, I shall be made well.”
a. Here is a woman, we do not know her name, but we know her condition. TBS, she went to
the doctors; spent all and was no better but grew worse.
b. I tell you just like this woman, who desperate in her condition turned to doctors/physicians
you and I can also do the same.

B. IOT: V38 and there was a famine in the land

1. The land was barren and dry, their food sources were limited. People were in danger of starvation.
a. Spiritually there is a drought in the hearts of people.
2. Theres spiritual barrenness.
a. Every corner there is a church, every one talk about Jesus but not walk with Jesus.
We are experiencing a great falling away from God.
But this should not surprise us.

b. TBS Amos 8:11 New King James Version

11
“Behold, the days are coming,” says the Lord GOD,
“That I will send a famine on the land,
Not a famine of bread,
Nor a thirst for water,
But of hearing the words of the LORD.

POINT 2: A DANGEROUS RECIPE

A. OTS in V39 So one went out into the field to gather herbs, and found a wild vine, and gathered from it a
lapful of wild gourds, and came and sliced them into the pot of stew, though they did not know what
they were. 40 Then they served it to the men to eat. Now it happened, as they were eating the stew, that
they cried out and said, “Man of God, there is death in the pot!” And they could not eat it.

Here’s the lesson:

1. We often go to the world thinking that will help satisfy us.
