Opening Prayer
Call to Worship
One: Come, out of your busy lives to a quiet time and place
All: Our souls thirst for some peace and quiet.
One: Come, and rest in the Lord who will restore your souls.
All: Our lives need moments of rest.
One: Come and find the quiet center. Come, be at peace.
All: Praise God who offers to us a shelter and resting place. AMEN.
Hymn
O Lord, Hear My Prayer
O Lord, hear my prayer. O Lord, hear my prayer.
When I call, answer me.
O Lord, hear my prayer. O Lord, hear my prayer.
Come and listen to me.
The Lord is my song; the Lord is my praise:
all my hope comes from God.
The Lord is my song; the Lord is my praise:
God the well spring of life.
O Lord, hear my prayer. O Lord, hear my prayer.
When I call, answer me.
O Lord, hear my prayer. O Lord, hear my prayer.
Come and listen to me.

Prayer of Confession
Patient God, we wait all year for the summer months when we can rest and
relax. Our schedules change from the demands of weekly living, to times
which are supposed to be devoted to leisure. But we have redefined leisure
to mean a flurry of activities. We need some time to rest, to sit quietly and
listen to the beautiful sounds of the world. Forgive us when we are
determined to crowd every moment of our lives with activity. Help us to
find a quiet center with you where we can just relax and not try to get
everything done as though life was some sort of a contest. Give us peace
for a little while. Refresh our souls so that we can truly serve you, not out
of exhaustion but out of enthusiasm. Be with us this day, for we ask these
things in Jesus’ Name. AMEN.
Silent Confession
Assurance of Pardon
One: God’s love awaits you. It has been lavished upon you as a gentle summer
rain, refreshing your souls, opening your hearts, healing your wounds.
Rest in God’s eternal love. AMEN.
PROCLAIMING THE WORD

Prayer of Illumination
Reading from the Psalms
Psalm 72
Of Solomon
Prayer for Guidance and Support for the King.
Give the king your justice, O God, and your righteousness to a king’s son. 2 May
he judge your people with righteousness, and your poor with justice. 3 May the
mountains yield prosperity for the people, and the hills, in righteousness. 4 May
he defend the cause of the poor of the people, give deliverance to the needy,
and crush the oppressor. 5 May he live while the sun endures, and as long as
3
the moon, throughout all generations. 6 May he be like rain that falls on the mown
grass, like showers that water the earth. 7 In his days may righteousness flourish
and peace abound, until the moon is no more. 8 May he have dominion from sea
to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth. 9 May his foes bow down
before him, and his enemies lick the dust. 10 May the kings of Tarshish and of
the isles render him tribute, may the kings of Sheba and Seba bring gifts. 11 May
all kings fall down before him, all nations give him service. 12 For he delivers the
needy when they call, the poor and those who have no helper. 13 He has pity on
the weak and the needy, and saves the lives of the needy. 14 From oppression
and violence he redeems their life; and precious is their blood in his sight. 15
Long may he live! May gold of Sheba be given to him. May prayer be made for
him continually, and blessings invoked for him all day long. 16 May there be
abundance of grain in the land; may it wave on the tops of the mountains; may
its fruit be like Lebanon; and may people blossom in the cities like the grass of
the field. 17 May his name endure forever, his fame continue as long as the sun.
May all nations be blessed in him; may they pronounce him happy. 18 Blessed
be the Lord, the God of Israel, who alone does wondrous things. 19 Blessed be
his glorious name forever; may his glory fill the whole earth. Amen and AMEN.
20 The prayers of David son of Jesse are ended.

Reading from the Gospel

Matthew 25:34-46
Then the king will say to those at his right hand, ‘Come, you that are blessed by my
Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; 35
for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something
4
to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, 36 I was naked and you gave me
clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.’ 37
Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry and
gave you food, or thirsty and gave you something to drink? 38 And when was it that
we saw you a stranger and welcomed you, or naked and gave you clothing? 39 And
when was it that we saw you sick or in prison and visited you?’ 40 And the king will
answer them, ‘Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are
members of my family, you did it to me.’ 41 Then he will say to those at his left hand,
‘You that are accursed, depart from me into the eternal fire prepared for the devil
and his angels; 42 for I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you
gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked
and you did not give me clothing, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.’ 44
Then they also will answer, ‘Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry or thirsty or
a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not take care of you?’ 45 Then he
will answer them, ‘Truly I tell you, just as you did not do it to one of the least of
these, you did not do it to me.’ 46 And these will go away into eternal punishment,
but the righteous into eternal life.”

“Leadership Under God”

RESPONDING TO THE WORD
Affirmation of Faith Second Helvetic Confession Chapter XVII
We believe this holy Church of God is called the temple of the Living God,
built of living and spiritual stones and founded upon a firm rock, upon a
foundation which no other can lay, and therefore it is called “the pillar and
bulwark of the truth.”. The church does not err as long as it rests upon the
rock Christ, and upon the foundation of the prophets and apostles. And it
is no wonder if it errs, as often as it deserts him who alone is the truth. This
5
Church is also called a virgin and the Bride of Christ, and even the only
Beloved. For the apostle says: “I betrothed you to Christ to present you as
a pure bride to Christ.” The Church is called a flock of sheep under the one
shepherd, Christ. It is also called the body of Christ because the faithful
are living members of Christ under Christ the Head. AMEN.
Hymn
Sanctuary
Lord, prepare me to be a sanctuary,
pure and holy, tried and true.
With thanksgiving, I’ll be a living sanctuary for you. x2

Did you know that one in five Floridians are presently food
insecure? In the Tampa Bay area, food insecurity has
doubled since the pandemic began. The demand on our
outdoor food pantry confirms this need. Please help us keep
the pantry full as our community continues to struggle with
hunger. Presently we have a great need for “pot size”
spaghetti, chili with meat, box fruit juice, and canned
spaghetti sauce with meat (no jars). Please avoid glass
containers. Food items can be dropped off on Sunday
mornings prior to service and placed in the wheeled grocery
cart, at the church office any morning, Monday through
Thursday, or Tuesday between 4 PM and 6 PM. Thank you
for your continued support as we bring hope to our neighborhood.
