GATHERING AROUND THE WORD

Opening Prayer
Call to Worship
One: Our souls long for you, O God.
All: When shall we behold your face?
One: Our souls are uneasy.
All: When shall hope lead us to praise you again?
One: During the day, your steadfast love sustains us.
All: During the night, your song washes over us.
One: Our hope leads us to praise you.
All: We praise you, our song of hope.
Hymn
To God Be the Glory
To God be the glory; great things he has done!
So loved he the world that he gave us his Son,
who yielded his life an atonement for sin,
and opened the life gate that all may go in.
Refrain
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord; let the earth hear his voice!
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, let the people rejoice!
O come to the Father through Jesus the Son,
and give him the glory: great things He hath done!

2
Great things he hath taught us; great things He has done,
and great our rejoicing through Jesus the Son;
but purer and higher and greater will be
our wonder, our transport, when Jesus we see.
refrain
Prayer of Confession
Lord of all, the nations are yours. The poor are your treasured ones—
widows, orphans, the aliens you protect. Your justice reigns over all.
Forgive us when our ways devour your beloved. We don’t mean to cause
harm, yet we do. Forgive us when we consume more than our fair share,
all the while knowing that our excesses deny the poor the things they need
to live. Forgive us for building bigger closets, and not clothing the naked.
Forgive us for vacationing in leisure, when multitudes long simply for rest.
Hear our prayer, Holy One. May your justice and grace reign forever.
Silent Confession
Assurance of Pardon
One: We long to mend our ways. Christ can bear these sins for all who eagerly
wait for him. His sacrifice on our behalf, his grace toward us, washes us
anew. AMEN
PROCLAIMING THE WORD

Prayer of Illumination
Reading from the New Testament
Hebrews 9:24-28
For Christ did not enter a sanctuary made by human hands, a mere copy of the
true one, but he entered into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God
on our behalf. 25 Nor was it to offer himself again and again, as the high priest
enters the Holy Place year after year with blood that is not his own; 26 for then
he would have had to suffer again and again since the foundation of the world.
3
But as it is, he has appeared once for all at the end of the age to remove sin by
the sacrifice of himself. 27 And just as it is appointed for mortals to die once, and
after that the judgment, 28 so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins
of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin, but to save those who
are eagerly waiting for him.

Reading from the New Gospel

Mark 12:38-44
As he taught, he said, “Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long
robes, and to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces, 39 and to have the
best seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets! 40 They devour
widows’ houses and for the sake of appearance say long prayers. They will
receive the greater condemnation.” 41 He sat down opposite the treasury, and
watched the crowd putting money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large
sums. 42 A poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which are worth
a penny. 43 Then he called his disciples and said to them, “Truly I tell you, this
poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the treasury.
44 For all of them have contributed out of their abundance; but she out of her
poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on.”

RESPONDING TO THE WORD
Affirmation of Faith Confession of Belhar
We believe in the triune God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, who gathers,
protects and cares for the church through Word and Spirit. This, God has
done since the beginning of the world and will do to the end. We believe in
one holy, universal Christian church, the communion of saints called from
the entire human family. We believe that Christ’s work of reconciliation is
made manifest in the church as the community of believers who have been
reconciled with God and with one another; that unity is, therefore, both a
gift and an obligation for the church of Jesus Christ; that through the
working of God’s Spirit it is a binding force, yet simultaneously a reality
which must be earnestly pursued and sought: one which the people of God
must continually be built up to attain; AMEN

Hymn
His Eye Is On The Sparrow
Why should I feel discouraged? Why should the shadows come?
Why should my heart be lonely and long for heaven and home,
when Jesus is my portion? My constant friend is he:
his eye is on the sparrow, and I know he watches me;
his eye is on the sparrow, and I know he watches me.
Refrain
I sing because I’m happy, I sing because I’m free,
for his eye is on the sparrow, and I know he watches me.
“Let not your heart be troubled,” his tender word I hear,
and resting on his goodness, I lose my doubts and fears;
though by the path he leadeth but one step I may see:
his eye is on the sparrow, and I know he watches me;
his eye is on the sparrow, and I know he watches me.
refrain
Whenever I am tempted, whenever clouds arise,
when song gives place to sighing, when hope within me dies,
I draw the closer to him; from care he sets me free:
his eye is on the sparrow, and I know he watches me;
his eye is on the sparrow, and I know he watches me.

approximate cost of this ministry is $140 per week for these meals. Contributions to support
the Neighborhood Meals can be donated to our “Neighborhood Food Ministry Fund.” We
appreciate your continued support in sharing these meals with our neighbors.

Blessings Box
Did you know that one in five Floridians are presently food insecure? In the Tampa Bay area, food
insecurity has doubled since the pandemic began. The demand on our outdoor food pantry confirms
this need. Please help us keep the pantry full as our community continues to struggle with hunger.
Presently we have a great need for applesauce, canned meats (chopped beef, pulled pork,
corned beef, corned beef hash, tuna in water), canned fruit, and boxed mac & cheese. Please
avoid glass containers. Food items can be dropped off on Sunday mornings prior to service and placed
in the wheeled grocery cart, at the church office any morning, Monday, Tuesday, or Thursday, or
Tuesday between 4 PM and 6 PM. Contributions to support the Blessing Box can be donated to our
“Neighborhood Food Ministry Fund.” Thank you for your continued support as we bring hope to our
neighborhood.
