GATHERING AROUND THE WORD

Call to Worship
One: Just as sunrise breaks through the darkness each day,
All: so God’s grace, mercy and justice shine forth.
One: We gather together, with devotion and with wonder;
All: trusting that God’s peace and love are present here.
One: Come and worship as you are, knowing you are loved.
All: We come, rejoicing, to praise God’s holy name.

Invocation
Holy One, Light of the world; In the sparkle of the snowflake, we see your beauty. Even in
the cold of winter, your creation amazes us. We praise you for blessing the world with such
beauty and giving us a place within it. Just as the season of winter renews creation for
springtime growth; renew us with your Spirit in this time of worship. Inspire us to grow in
faithfulness and service. Grant that our lives can shine the light of Christ into these
challenging times this day. Amen

*Hymn
Morning Has Broken

Morning has broken like the first morning;

blackbird has spoken like the first bird.
Praise for the singing! Praise for the morning!
Praise for them, springing fresh from the Word!

Sweet the rain’s new fall sunlit from heaven,

like the first dewfall on the first grass.
Praise for the sweetness of the wet garden,
sprung in completeness where God’s feet pass.
2
Mine is the sunlight! Mine is the morning,
born of the one light Eden saw play!
Praise with elation; praise every morning,
God’s recreation of the new day!

Prayer of Confession
God of love and all creation, we confess we have taken your creation for granted. Lord have
mercy when we squander its resources as if they were only for us. Forgive us Lord when
we consume whatever we choose and fail to offer compassion for others in need. Forgive
us, we pray. Shine your light on us so we may see the ways of your love and compassion
more clearly. Inspire us to follow the path of love Jesus sets before us.

Silent Confession
Assurance of Pardon
*Affirmation of Faith 1 Corinthians 13:4-13
I believe Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or
rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice
in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all
things, endures all things. Love never ends. But as for prophecies, they will come to an
end; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will come to an end. For we
know only in part, and we prophesy only in part; but when the complete comes, the
partial will come to an end. When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child,
I reasoned like a child; when I became an adult, I put an end to childish ways. For now
we see in a mirror, dimly, but then we will see face to face. Now I know only in part;
then I will know fully, even as I have been fully known. And now faith, hope, and love
abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love.
PROCLAIMING THE WORD

Prayer of Illumination
Reading from the Old Testament
Psalms 113
Praise the LORD! Praise, O servants of the LORD; praise the name of the LORD. 2 Blessed
be the name of the LORD from this time on and for evermore. 3 From the rising of the sun to
its setting the name of the LORD is to be praised. The LORD is high above all nations, and
his glory above the heavens. 5 Who is like the LORD our God, who is seated on high, 6 who
3
looks far down on the heavens and the earth? 7 He raises the poor from the dust, and lifts
the needy from the ash heap, 8 to make them sit with princes, with the princes of his people.
9 He gives the barren woman a home, making her the joyous mother of children.
The Holy Bible: New Revised Standard Version (Nashville: Thomas Nelson Publishers, 1989), Psalm 113.

Reading from the New Testament

1 Corinthians 2;1-10, 15-16
When I came to you, brothers and sisters, I did not come proclaiming the mystery of God to you
in lofty words or wisdom. 2 For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and
him crucified. 3 And I came to you in weakness and in fear and in much trembling. 4 My speech
and my proclamation were not with plausible words of wisdom, but with a demonstration of the
Spirit and of power, 5 so that your faith might rest not on human wisdom but on the power of God.
6 Yet among the mature we do speak wisdom, though it is not a wisdom of this age or of the rulers
of this age, who are doomed to perish. 7 But we speak God’s wisdom, secret and hidden, which
God decreed before the ages for our glory. 8 None of the rulers of this age understood this; for if
they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. 9 But, as it is written, ‘What no eye has
seen, nor ear heard, nor the human heart conceived, what God has prepared for those who love
him’—10 these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches everything,
even the depths of God. 15 Those who are spiritual discern all things, and they are themselves
subject to no one else’s scrutiny. 16 ‘For who has known the mind of the Lord so as to instruct
him?’ But we have the mind of Christ.
The Holy Bible: New Revised Standard Version (Nashville: Thomas Nelson Publishers, 1989), 1Cor 2:1-10, 15-16.

One Bread, One Body
Refrain
One bread, one body, one Lord of all,
one cup of blessing which we bless.
And we, though many, through-out the earth,
we are one body in this one Lord.
Gentile or Jew, servant or free, woman or man, no more. refrain
Many the gifts, many the works, one in the Lord of all. refrain
Grain for the fields, scattered and grown, gathered to one, for all. refrain

Reading from the Gospel
Matthew 5:13-20
‘You are the salt of the earth; but if salt has lost its taste, how can its saltiness be restored? It is
no longer good for anything, but is thrown out and trampled under foot. 14 ‘You are the light of the
world. A city built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the
bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 In the same way, let
your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father
in heaven. 17 ‘Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets; I have come not
to abolish but to fulfil. 18 For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not one letter, not
one stroke of a letter, will pass from the law until all is accomplished.19 Therefore, whoever breaks
one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, will be called least
in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the
kingdom of heaven. 20 For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and
Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.
The Holy Bible: New Revised Standard Version (Nashville: Thomas Nelson Publishers, 1989), Mt 5:13-20.

I Come With Joy

I come with joy, a child of God,

forgiven, loved, and free,
the life of Jesus to recall,
in love laid down for me, in love laid down for me.
I come with Christians far and near
to find, as all are fed,
the new community of love
in Christ’s communion bread, in Christ’s communion bread.
As Christ breaks bread and bids us share,
each proud division ends.
The love that made us, makes us one,
and strangers now are friends, and strangers now are friends.
The Spirit of the risen Christ,
unseen, but ever near,
is in such friendship better known,
alive among us here, alive among us here.
Together met, together bound
by all that God has done,
we’ll go with joy, to give the world
the love that makes us one, the love that makes us one.

GOING OUT INTO THE WORLD

*Hymn
For the Bread Which You Have Broken
For the bread which you have broken,
for the wine which you have poured,
for the words which you have spoken,
now we give you thanks, O Lord.
By this promise that you love us,
by your gift of peace restored,
by your call to heaven above us,
hallow all our lives, O Lord.
With the saints who now adore you
seated at the heavenly board,
may the church still waiting for you
keep love's tie unbroken, Lord.
In your service, Lord, defend us;
in our hearts keep watch and ward;
in the world to which you send us
let your kingdom come, O Lord.
