GATHERING AROUND THE WORD

Opening Prayer
Call to Worship
One: Come, give thanks to the Lord with all your heart and soul!
All: We come, rejoicing over God’s many blessings poured out on us!
One: God’s works are great!
All: We delight in learning about them.
One: Respect for God and all that God offers to us is the beginning of wisdom.
All: With gratefulness, we shall praise and honor God all our lives. AMEN.

Hymn
O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing
O for a thousand tongues to sing
my dear Redeemer’s praise,
the glories of my God and King,
the triumphs of God’s grace!
The name of Jesus charms our fears,
and bids our sorrows cease,
sings music in the sinner’s ears,
brings life, and health, and peace.
Christ speaks, and listening to his voice
new life the dead receive;
the mournful waken to rejoice;
the poor in heart believe.
2
My gracious Master and my God,
assist me to proclaim,
to spread through all the earth abroad
the honors of thy name.
To God all glory, praise, and love
be now and ever given
by saints below and saints above,
the church in earth and heaven.
Prayer of Confession
Gracious and Merciful Lord, you have offered to us food for the journey.
You remind us that your very life will sustain us as we witness to your love.
But sometimes we let those reminders slip from our consciousness. We
wallow in our difficulty; make excuses for not living the kind of life that you
would have us life; treat others in ways which are not healthy or loving.
Please forgive us, Lord. Stop us in our tracks and help us to examine the
many ways in which we have not served you well and the callous things
we have done to others. Cleanse our spirits and our souls from these
unrighteous acts, and cause us to follow you more closely. Remind us
again that you are the Bread of Life, having given yourself for us. Sustain
us and encourage us in our service. These things we ask in Jesus’ Name.
AMEN.
Silent Confession
Assurance of Pardon
One: Even though we turn our backs on God, God is ready to forgive and heal
our spirits. God’s love never fails, and we can rejoice in the power of that
eternal love. In the name of Jesus Christ, you are healed and forgiven.
AMEN.

PROCLAIMING THE WORD

Prayer of Illumination
Reading from the Psalms
Psalm 91
Assurance of God’s Protection
You who live in the shelter of the Most High, who abide in the shadow of the
Almighty, 2 will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress; my God, in whom I
trust.” 3 For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the deadly
pestilence; 4 he will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find
refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and buckler. 5 You will not fear the terror of
the night, or the arrow that flies by day, 6 or the pestilence that stalks in darkness,
or the destruction that wastes at noonday.
7 A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not
come near you. 8 You will only look with your eyes and see the punishment of
the wicked.
9 Because you have made the Lord your refuge, the Most High your dwelling
place, 10 no evil shall befall you, no scourge come near your tent.
11 For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.
12 On their hands they will bear you up, so that you will not dash your foot against
a stone. 13 You will tread on the lion and the adder, the young lion and the
serpent you will trample under foot.
14 Those who love me, I will deliver; I will protect those who know my name. 15
When they call to me, I will answer them; I will be with them in trouble, I will
rescue them and honor them. 16 With long life I will satisfy them, and show them
my salvation.

Reading from the Gospel

Luke 4:1-13
Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in
the wilderness, 2 where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing
at all during those days, and when they were over, he was famished. 3 The devil
said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become a loaf of
bread.” 4 Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘One does not live by bread alone.’”
5 Then the devil led him up and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the
world. 6 And the devil said to him, “To you I will give their glory and all this authority;
for it has been given over to me, and I give it to anyone I please. 7 If you, then, will
worship me, it will all be yours.” 8 Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘Worship the
Lord your God, and serve only him.’”
9 Then the devil took him to Jerusalem, and placed him on the pinnacle of the
temple, saying to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here,
10 for it is written, ‘He will command his angels concerning you, to protect you,’ 11
and ‘On their hands they will bear you up, so that you will not dash your foot against
a stone.’”
12 Jesus answered him, “It is said, ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’” 13
When the devil had finished every test, he departed from him until an opportune
time.

RESPONDING TO THE WORD
Affirmation of Faith Second Helvetic Confession Chapter X
We believe that we are to have a good hope for all. And although God
knows who are his, and here and there mention is made of the small
number of elect, yet we must hope well of all, and not rashly judge any
person to be a reprobate. For Paul says to the Philippians, “I thank my God
for you all because of your fellowship in the Gospel, being persuaded that
he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of
Jesus Christ. It is also right that we have this opinion of all. AMEN.
Invitation to Giving
Doxology
Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heavenly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

Blessings Box
Did you know that one in five Floridians are presently food insecure? In the
Tampa Bay area, food insecurity has doubled since the pandemic began.
The demand on our outdoor food pantry confirms this need. Please help us
keep the pantry full as our community continues to struggle with hunger.
Presently we have a great need for cups & canned fruit, canned
vegetables (corn, green beans, and peas), and canned meats (pulled
pork, chopped beef, beef stew, corned beef hash), and canned chili
w/meat (not spicy). Please avoid glass containers. Food items can be
dropped off on Sunday mornings prior to service and placed in the wheeled
grocery cart, at the church office any morning, Monday, Tuesday, or
Thursday, or Tuesday between 4 PM and 6 PM. Thank you for your continued support as we bring
hope to our neighborhood.

CPC Neighborhood Meals

We continue to provide weekly bagged meals on Tuesdays at
5 PM in front of the church. We assemble them at 4 PM in Don
Airey Hall following COVID-19 precautions. You can make a
difference by sending in a donation to “Neighborhood Meals”
to help us continue this vital ministry. The approximate cost of
this ministry is $140 per week for these meals. We appreciate your
continued support in sharing these meals with our neighbors.
