GATHERING AROUND THE WORD

Opening Prayer
Call to Worship
One: Along with all those in heaven, let us cry out together:
All: Salvation belongs to our God who is seated on the throne, and to
the Lamb!
One: Along with the redeemed, let us praise God with joyful hearts:
All: For this reason we come before the throne of God and worship the
Lord day and night.
One: Called together by the Holy Spirit, let us rejoice and sing:
All: We will hunger and thirst no more. The Lamb will guide us to springs
of the water of life.
One: Let us worship God!
*Hymn
There’s a Sweet, Sweet Spirit
There's a sweet, sweet Spirit in this place,
and I know that it's the Spirit of the Lord;
there are sweet expressions on each face,
and I know they feel the presence of the Lord.

2
Refrain
Sweet Holy Spirit, sweet heavenly Dove,
stay right here with us, filling us with your love;
and for these blessings we lift our hearts in praise;
without a doubt we'll know that we have been revived
when we shall leave this place.
There are blessings you cannot receive
till you know him in his fullness and believe;
you're the one to profit when you say,
“I am going to walk with Jesus all the way.”
refrain
Prayer of Confession
Merciful God, we confess we stray from your ways like lost sheep. We
follow the desires of our own hearts, ignoring the needs of others. We
judge ourselves more generously than others. We fail to offer others the
forgiveness we seek from you. We nurse grudges and cling to our own
opinions. Forgive the ways we betray your love, and return us to your paths
of truth and mercy.
Silent Confession
Assurance of Pardon
One: The Letter to the Ephesians declares that Christ dwells in our hearts
through faith, for we are being rooted and grounded in his love. The
forgiveness he offers is a gift of this love. Receive God’s forgiveness with
faithful hearts, and be at peace with God, with yourself and with each
other
All: The peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with us all!

PROCLAIMING THE WORD

Prayer of Illumination
Reading from Epistles
Acts 9:36-43
Now in Joppa there was a disciple whose name was Tabitha, which in Greek is
Dorcas. She was devoted to good works and acts of charity. 37 At that time she
became ill and died. When they had washed her, they laid her in a room upstairs.
38 Since Lydda was near Joppa, the disciples, who heard that Peter was there,
sent two men to him with the request, “Please come to us without delay.” 39 So
Peter got up and went with them; and when he arrived, they took him to the room
upstairs. All the widows stood beside him, weeping and showing tunics and other
clothing that Dorcas had made while she was with them. 40 Peter put all of them
outside, and then he knelt down and prayed. He turned to the body and said,
“Tabitha, get up.” Then she opened her eyes, and seeing Peter, she sat up. 41
He gave her his hand and helped her up. Then calling the saints and widows, he
showed her to be alive. 42 This became known throughout Joppa, and many
believed in the Lord. 43 Meanwhile he stayed in Joppa for some time with a
certain Simon, a tanner.

Reading from the Gospel
John 10:22-30
At that time the festival of the Dedication took place in Jerusalem. It was winter,
23 and Jesus was walking in the temple, in the portico of Solomon. 24 So the
Jews gathered around him and said to him, “How long will you keep us in
suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly.” 25 Jesus answered, “I have
told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in my Father’s name testify
to me; 26 but you do not believe, because you do not belong to my sheep. 27
My sheep hear my voice. I know them, and they follow me. 28 I give them eternal
life, and they will never perish. No one will snatch them out of my hand. 29 What
my Father has given me is greater than all else, and no one can snatch it out of
the Father’s hand. 30 The Father and I are one.”

RESPONDING TO THE WORD
*Affirmation of Faith Apostles’ Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in
Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,
born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead,
and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the
dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the
Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the
dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion
of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life
everlasting. AMEN.

*Hymn
Live Into Hope
Live into hope of captives freed,
of sight regained, the end of greed.
The oppressed shall be the first to see
the year of God's own jubilee!

Live into hope! The blind shall see

with insight and with clarity,
removing shades of pride and fear,
a vision of our God brought near.
Live into hope of liberty,
the right to speak, the right to be,
the right to have one's daily bread,
to hear God's word and thus be fed.

Live into hope of captives freed

from chains of fear or want or greed.
God now proclaims our full release
to faith and hope and joy and peace.
Invitation to Giving
Doxology
Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heavenly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.
