GATHERING AROUND THE WORD

Litany for Children’s Sabbath and Opening Prayer

…In seeing this candle burn bright, we remember that You are ever present in
our lives and in the lives of your precious children here in Florida, in the United
States, and in the world. God, we come to You in worship today to adore and
praise you for all that you have done for us and continue to do in the lives of
Your children. We call upon you to challenge us to reimagine our future with
Your children, Your justice, and Your joy. AMEN.
Opening Prayer
Call to Worship
One: Gather our hearts, O God, knitting us together across difference and
division to live with your compassion.
All: Gather our minds, O God, from distractions and distance to focus
on you and your children.
One: Gather our wills, O God, to be strong and courageous in pursuit of your
justice.
All: By the power of your holy spirit, make us one in heart, mind, and
spirit as we worship you on this Children’s Sabbath day. Come, let
us worship God.

*Hymn
Jesus Loves Me
Jesus loves me! This I know, for the Bible tells me so.
Little ones to him belong. They are weak, but he is strong.
Refrain
Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me! The Bible tells me so.
Jesus loves me! This I know, as he loved so long ago,
taking children on his knee, saying, "Let them come to me."
refrain
Prayer of Confession
God of our hopes and our hearts, You provide the gift of faith but we lose
heart quickly. Troubles weaken our trust and disappointments eat away at
our commitment. Forgive us and create in us clean hearts and in your love,
give us peace and perseverance.
Silent Confession
Assurance of Pardon
One: Remember the promise Paul declares: What will separate us from the
love of Christ? Hardship? Distress? Peril or sword? No, in all these things
we are more than conquerors through the God who loves us. Neither
death nor life, nor things present nor things to come can separate us from
the love of God in Christ Jesus. Let us rejoice that, no matter what is
happening around us, no matter what we have done, God’s deep love will
never let us go.
All: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven and set free by God’s most
generous grace!

Hymn
Sanctuary
Lord, prepare me to be a sanctuary,
pure and holy, tried and true.
With thanksgiving, I'll be a living
sanctuary for you. x2
PROCLAIMING THE WORD

Prayer of Illumination
Reading from the Psalms
Psalm 121
I lift up my eyes to the hills—from where will my help come? 2 My help comes from the
Lord, who made heaven and earth. 3 He will not let your foot be moved; he who keeps
you will not slumber. 4 He who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. 5 The Lord
is your keeper; the Lord is your shade at your right hand. 6 The sun shall not strike you
by day, nor the moon by night. 7 The Lord will keep you from all evil; he will keep your
life. 8 The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in from this time on and
forevermore.
The Holy Bible: New Revised Standard Version. (1989). (Ps 121:1–8). Nashville: Thomas Nelson Publishers.

Reading from the Epistles

2 Timothy 3:14-4:5
But as for you, continue in what you have learned and firmly believed, knowing from
whom you learned it, 15 and how from childhood you have known the sacred writings
that are able to instruct you for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All scripture
is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training
in righteousness, 17 so that everyone who belongs to God may be proficient, equipped
for every good work. 4 In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the
living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I solemnly urge you:
2 proclaim the message; be persistent whether the time is favorable or unfavorable;
convince, rebuke, and encourage, with the utmost patience in teaching. 3 For the time
is coming when people will not put up with sound doctrine, but having itching ears, they
4
will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own desires, 4 and will turn away
from listening to the truth and wander away to myths. 5 As for you, always be sober,
endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, carry out your ministry fully.
The Holy Bible: New Revised Standard Version. (1989). (2 Ti 3:14–4:5). Nashville: Thomas Nelson Publishers.

One: This is the Word of the Lord.

All: Thanks be to God!

Reading from the Gospel

Luke 18:1-8
Then Jesus told them a parable about their need to pray always and not to lose heart.
2 He said, “In a certain city there was a judge who neither feared God nor had respect
for people. 3 In that city there was a widow who kept coming to him and saying, ‘Grant
me justice against my opponent.’ 4 For a while he refused; but later he said to himself,
‘Though I have no fear of God and no respect for anyone, 5 yet because this widow
keeps bothering me, I will grant her justice, so that she may not wear me out by
continually coming.’ ” 6 And the Lord said, “Listen to what the unjust judge says. 7 And
will not God grant justice to his chosen ones who cry to him day and night? Will he
delay long in helping them? 8 I tell you, he will quickly grant justice to them. And yet,
when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?”

RESPONDING TO THE WORD
*Affirmation of Faith Apostles’ Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in
Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,
born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead,
and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the
dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the
Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the
dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion
of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life
everlasting. AMEN.
Invitation to Giving

GOING OUT INTO THE WORLD

*Hymn
Live into Hope
Live into hope of captives freed,
of sight regained, the end of greed.
The oppressed shall be the first to see
the year of God's own jubilee!
Live into hope! The blind shall see
with insight and with clarity,
removing shades of pride and fear,
a vision of our God brought near.
Live into hope of liberty,
the right to speak, the right to be,
the right to have one's daily bread,
to hear God's word and thus be fed.
Live into hope of captives freed
from chains of fear or want or greed.
God now proclaims our full release
to faith and hope and joy and peace.
