Students nowadays are being challenged with different circumstances which hinders them to achieve their goals in school. One of
these circumstances falls under discrimination.
Discrimination is the unfair treatment of one particular person or group of people. Usually the different treatment is because of
the person’s sex, religion, nationality, ethnicity (culture), race, or other personal traits.
In the previous module, you have learned that there are 8 types of discrimination. In this lesson, we will focus in the two most
common type of discrimination, Age and Disability.
Ageism refers to the stereotypes (how we think), prejudice (how we feel) and discrimination (how we act) towards others or
oneself based on age. This happens often in school especially when a student has an obvious age gap compared to his/her
classmates.
Example:
Disability discrimination is when a person with a disability is treated less favorably than a person without the disability in the
same or similar circumstances.
Example:
1. A restaurant refused a person’s entry because they are blind and have a guide dog.
2. When there is a rule or policy that is the same for everyone but has an unfair effect on people with a particular disability.
Religion- Belief in and reverence for a supernatural power recognized as the creator and governor of the universe; A particular
integrated system of this expression; The spiritual or emotional attitude of one who recognizes the existence of a superhuman power or
powers.
Religious discrimination, involves treating a person (an applicant or employee) unfavorably because of his or her religious
beliefs. The law protects not only people who belong to traditional, organized religions, such as Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism,
Islam, and Judaism, but also others who have sincerely held religious, ethical or moral beliefs.
Religious discrimination can also involve treating someone differently because that person is married to (or associated with)
an individual of a particular religion.
Example:
Gender identity discrimination is a specific form of gender discrimination that involves unfair treatment based on your sense of
your own gender or the cultural characteristics associated with it.
Sex discrimination occurs when a person is treated less favorably because of that person’s sex, which includes sexual
orientation, gender identity or expression, pregnancy or pregnancy-related condition (including lactation), or a sex stereotype.
Learn more here about your right to be protected against sex discrimination and what to do if your rights are violated.
Examples of sex discrimination could include:
not hiring a woman because the employer thinks she won’t fit into a ‘traditionally’ male workplace.
not paying a woman the same salary as a man for doing the same work, or not providing the same opportunities for
training, mentoring or promotion.
allocating work tasks based on a person’s sex.
