Inquiring & analyzing A
Justifying a need for a solution

Brainstorming
1. Problem: Moving into a new country and being unknown to the surroundings (important
locations, historical sites, rules, and laws)
Potential Solution: A Boardgame that familiarizes a newcomer in a new community.
2. Problem: New students coming into a school in a new country can feel scared and
unfamiliarized with new cultures and people.
Potential Solution: A “culture” space where people can all come together to share
experiences and parts of their cultures (food, festivals, clothing etc..) and getting to know new
people
3. Problem: Moving into a new community with your family and feeling scared/ unwelcome as
you don’t know your neighbors and don’t have any friends in that new residential community.
Potential Solution: A welcome package for a family joining a new residential community to
make the family already feel at home in a new area.
4. Problem: Women new to the middle east/ GCC who are not familiarized with the
modesty rules in the UAE and rules, regarding what should be worn.
Potential Solution: A clothing line that is fit for women moving into the UAE and other GCC
countries. The line will be modest, to fit the restrictions and respect the religion of the country
while being stylish and trendy.

Global Context exploration:

Moving into a new country is a very hard experience to go through, the teenager’s or child’s mental
and physical health will be affected negatively, and they will feel unmotivated and unhappy with their
surroundings. The rest of their family would be busy settling into their jobs and house, so they will
not have their full focus on their kids. This transition will help form the child/teenager identity, as the
child needs to experience unfamiliar situations and venture out into a new community of people.
Unfortunately, these feelings and emotions are experienced by many kids that move around, and a
solution to this problem can help eliminate this faulty mental health and improve psychological and
social aspects. (“Is a sense of belonging important”)

3 | E-portfolio 2020-2021
Problem statement:
Feeling a sense of belonging is common thing that everyone
should experience. It’s the concept that allows people feel like
they fit in and belong in a certain community. Maslow’s hierarchy
of needs has especially highlighted this as an important
motivator, not only applying to the business world and HR
management, but also to your everyday life, and in the pyramid,
it is shown that in after the physiological and safety needs are
fulfilled , a sense of belongingness is a crucial human need.
Forming relationships motivates a positive and stable behavior.
Moving around is a very common thing that occurs around the
world every day. Families are leaving their home countries, to
explore new and foreign countries and open up opportunities Fig 1, ("Maslow's Hierarchy Of Needs Explained")
for themselves and their kids, but children and teenagers do
frequently face difficulties when moving to a new country, it’s a new and unknown place for them,
making friends and settling in is definitely not easy .Although Dubai isn’t a very big city, it sure is a
complicated one to settle into and get used to. Around 200,000 people move to Dubai every year
("Dubai Population 2020 (Demographics, Maps, Graphs) It attracts expats from all over the world
and the population of this innovative city is growing by 10.7% every year ("Dubai Population 2020
(Demographics, Maps, Graphs") by the expats coming in. Feeling unwelcome in a new country can
really affect the child/teenagers mental health, and this can cause self-esteem issues and the ability
to meet goals and be motivated to work hard and do well in academics and extra-curriculars
("Factors Affecting Mental Health - Can We Talk"), leading to depression or unfulfillment and
unhappiness in life.

Target Audience:
Aspect Description
Age: 7-18
Gender: Male & Female
Location: Dubai, UAE
Psychographics: Typically tend to be shy and emotionally fraught
Type of buyers: Serious buyers
Income Medium class income group and above
Occupation: Students
The target audience of my product is children and teenagers moving to Dubai and are unfamiliar
with the whereabouts and important locations of the city.

Causes and effects of the problem

The Mental Health of these teenagers and kids moving around and not “fitting” in can be very
triggered by these big changes (moving countries, moving schools etc..). They can experience a lot
of emotional turmoil, and feel confused or disturbed with their surroundings, which will cause them to
always be agitated, and stressed out ("Childs Difficulty Adjusting-To Life Abroad"). The lack of a
sense of belonging in a community can cause depression, anxiety and other mental illnesses, and
these conditions can lead to social behaviors that can contribute to pushing the person away more

from a community and weakens their sense of belonging, as they aren’t able to connect with anyone.
("Is A Sense Of Belonging Important?")

Need for a solution

Having recognized the causes and effects of the problem at hand supported by the results of a
survey conducted on a sample of my chosen target audience (new students in Dubai aged 7-18)
(Appendix C) it was found that there was a need for a solution to this problem, and this was identified
through a detailed analysis of the survey results:
▪ Teenagers and kids are unable to focus on their emotional and physical wellbeing as they are
too distracted and stressed out about how to fit in and make friends.
▪ Teens and kids are scared as they are entering a completely new and unfamiliar country to
them.
▪ Mental health should be good to continue their academic lives and form good relationships
with their families, teachers, and friends

Design Brief

The aim of this e-portfolio is to promote identities and relationships through designing an innovative
solution to create a sense of belonging. Seeing many new students coming into my school year after
year, I saw how lost and scared they were and how uncomfortable these unfamiliar situations can be
for people and feeling like they belong to the new community they have moved into is not easy. After
identifying the problem, it was decided that I would be creating an innovative and interactive board
game for children and teenagers aged between 7-18 years which will be composed of content and
aspects which help newcomers in Dubai get familiarized with their surroundings, and important
rules/laws that need to be known and followed.

Primary and secondary research was conducted to rule out the effectiveness and impact of how people
have used boardgames as a way to be more comfortable, and form relationships in a new community.
It’s a tool for the child/teenager to learn how to be more involved in an unfamiliar setting. Pictures,
videos, and articles Sources such as online articles, images, videos, blogs, and articles were used to
inform and support my approach towards creating an innovative solution to this growing problem and
help dictate the design and manufacturing of my product. A survey conducted with MYP students at
my school found that majority of the people thought that board games were an effective way to make
friends and feel comfortable in a new community, and that making friends help new kids feel at home
and comfortable in their new community, and majority of the students chose boardgames as the most
stimulating activity . Several products were considered by means of a detailed ACCESSFM analysis

14 | E-portfolio 2020-2021
of 4 chosen products, where various inspirations were deduced which would benefit the designing
process. They are as followed:

▪ Although the product should be unique and customized to its specific theme, I must
ensure that the product’s basic design associates with a standard board game, and it
should have a familiar function.

▪ The product should have vibrant, yet relaxing colors that help towards calming down
the customer while playing the board game

▪ The product should be able to fold up, meaning that it has easy storage and should be
a moderate size, which can be placed on most tables.

This product should be able to allow these teenagers and children moving into Dubai to feel a sense
of belonging as the product should introduce and highlight the important locations, laws, and rules that
should be taken into consideration. Getting the chance to play this game with family can strengthen
their relationship, and playing with peers can develop new friendships, which will really help these new
kids. In terms of material choice, it was found that many board games were made out of double wall
cardboard, chipboard, and MDF. But based on the research made MDF was the most suitable material
to be used, as it is durable and water-resistant. The dice and playing pieces are usually made out of
plastic, which is melted and molded into certain shapes, but these pieces can also be made from the
3D printer, by creating the shape on a CAD software like fusion 360, tinkercad, onshape, etc... The
playing cards will be made of heavy-duty cardstock which will be printed on and laminated, to prevent
any damage to the extra pieces.

To conclude, after conducting and completing the research process, I was inspired and entranced to
design and create a product for people who go through a lot of hardships when moving into a new
community/country. I was motivated to make a positive effort to help and better these kids experiences
and mental health. The product that will be created is a board game aiming to allow the users to find
out more about Dubai using interactive and fun elements. This will help them blend more in the
community which will increase the sense of belonging and as a result will make them happier and will
ensure a stable and stress-free life. All these are different explorations for the chosen global context
“identities and relationships”.

Design 1 Design 2 has met all of the specifications expect two. One which focuses on the material used to
create the project, and the other which focuses on the main theme present throughout the
boardgame. The design is simple and doesn’t have any creative elements incorporated throughout.
Design 2 The design has passed most of the specifications expect for four and has somewhat met two. The
design did have many creative aspects tying in with the Dubai theme, but didn’t live up to the main
goal behind the creation of this product. The product also doesn’t focus on ergonomics, which is an
important aspect that I wanted to focus on when creating my final product, as I wanted it to be easy
to carry around and easy to store.
Design 3 This design has successfully passed and met all the specifications. It is an aesthetically pleasing
design which fits into the Dubai theme. The boardgame is easy to carry around and is compact.

Peer and Client feedback

In order to acquire an understanding of the
market and what products are admissible, I
sent out a survey to 20 peers in my class who
fit the target audience and are considered part
of the clientele. Communicating with the target
audience was a very important step to
understand the potential customers likes and
dislikes about the product, and what they
thought about the aesthetics, and ergonomics
of the product. Their feedback would give me
Fig 2, Self-Made an insight into what must be improved
throughout the product, so that it is ensured that
the final product can be customized and
adapted to exactly what the audience was
looking for. For this specific survey, I mainly
recognized which of the three developed
designs were favored by the target audience.
According to the survey, Design 3 was the most
desirable design by the target audience with
65% agreeing that it should be the final product.
When questioned about the reason, the most
common response was the overall aesthetics of
Fig 3, Self-Made
the design were very appealing, and that its
functionality was clear and easily
understandable. They also mentioned the fact that the use of thin MDF and the addition of pockets
with zippers made the product more engaging. Out of the 20 students surveyed, 85% of them
understood the designs and thought they were clear, and 15% found the designs unclear and difficult
to interpret.

Self-evaluation
To productively self-evaluate the three developed designs and attain a prospective final product,
each design will be evaluated under the 4 categories of aesthetics, function, ergonomics, and
feasibility. The design will be given a rating out of 5 for each category, and an overall rating for each
of the designs.

The final design can be seen in figures x and y and was based upon developed design 3, This
design was faithfully selected based on client evaluation, peer evaluation, specification and self-
evaluation. In a survey conducted with 20 peers ( which all fit in the target audience). The large
majority of the peers selected design 3, and when asked for the reasoning, the most common
response was the functionality and aesthetics of the design.
After thoroughly evaluating the functionality, aesthetics, ergonomics, and feasibility of the design. It
was decided that it would be the most suitable and preferred product out of all 3 designs, where it
scored 18/20 in the specification evaluation. I personally preferred this product for various reasons,
the most remarkable, being that it remained tying in with the Dubai theme, which is the main theme
and goal that the design was built on originally. The easily carriable and storable design, with sturdy
handles, pockets, and a light weight because of the MDF used.

Lesson 1 & 2
Lesson 1
Today was my first lesson of the creation of my product. I
started by ruling out and drawing on the measurements
500 by 250 mm of MDF which needed to be cut out. The
first piece I measured out and cut using the band saw
turned out to be incorrect and was too short, so I
measured another piece and used the band saw to cut
Fig 8, Measuring the wood the pieces accurately, and to make sure that the sides
were straight and equal to each other. I also decided to
Fig 9 , cutting the wood with band
use the sanding machines to sand down the sides, as
saw
one side was still a bit lopsided. I started mid lesson, so I
wasn’t able to continue the cutting process.
Lesson 2
After coming back to the next PD lesson, I started
working again. As I was done with the main step of
cutting, I used sanding paper to keep all the sides smooth
and slightly curved on the sides ( as mentioned in the
specifications). I felt like I achieved quite a lot in this
lesson – as I got the base of the product ready to be

30 | E-portfolio 2020-2021
Lesson 3
Today was the first lesson for me to work on the
assembly of my product. I did have quite a few difficulties
and was a bit frustrated at first with measuring the
leather and cutting it out. But after one trial I was able to
get it together and finish the sticking process. The leather
stuck on perfectly all over expect for one face, It looked
askew, and I didn’t like the way it looked. I decided to cut
another piece and it was neatly cut but as soon as I fitted
it over the wood it was too short and looked really bad.
And by the end of the lesson, I decided to stick the 1st
Fig 12, Tracing out the piece of leather and stick another piece of leather on the
leather lopsided face. I didn’t have time to finish it this lesson, so
I decided to push it to the next lesson.

Fig 13, cutting out the leather I was ready to directly start working on my product and fix
the mishaps by sticking a piece on top of the other piece,
but it just looked so bad and unprofessional. The whole
look of the product didn’t reflect what I wanted it to look
like, so I ripped of the leather and cut another piece – this
time using an x-acto knife. The x-acto knife elevated the
whole look of the product and made it look very clean and
finished. I was relieved that I was done with this step as
I knew I still had quite a lot of things to do before the
deadline ( Saturday 13th)
Fig 14, gluing on the wood to leather
piece
Lesson 4
Today I worked on the extra details which pull the whole
product together. I started by stitching the felt pockets
together. I repeated it twice to get my two pockets and
when I finished off both of them I stuck on the Velcro. I
stuck on both of the pockets to the face of the boardgame
using PVA glue.
Then I moved onto creating the handle by cutting out a
piece leather using an x-acto knife ,tracing out an
Fig 15, cutting out the leather handle identical piece of felt and cutting it using scissors. I stuck
the felt to the inside of the leather piece to create a
padding and I cut slits on each side of the handle to stick
inside the actual boardgame.
I opened up my boardgame and applied some hot glue
using the glue gun onto the inside gap of the boardgame
and stuck the handle from either side. I folded up and
stuck a small piece of leather using PVA glue to cover the
extra gap in the middle which I left to allow the
Fig 16, stitching the pockets
boardgame to close seamlessly. This made the overall
look of the boardgame professional and finished.

31 | E-portfolio 2020-2021
Lesson 5
Today is my last day working on my final product. I
started off by painting the inside base of the boardgame
using acrylic paint. I chose to use a light blue color (
based off the primary research I did ) and as I waited for it
to dry I painted all the sides to give the boardgame a nice
and professional finish, then I went over with another
layer of paint to make sure that the color was showing
clearly ( as MDF does absorb paint quickly and effectively
Fig 17, inside of boardgame. )
When all the paint dried, I printed out all the pictures and
icons which I was going to use for the actual boardgame
design. I cut out each piece carefully and kept them
aside, as I started to design the path for the boardgame..
I drew out a very organic pathway which the boardgame
would flow in on a piece of white A4 paper and cut it out.
After deciding that and drawing it out, I cut that piece of
paper, divided it into equal sections and numbered them
Fig 18, painting the base all using colorful markers. I then colored each of the
boxes to give a more vibrant appeal to my boardgame

Final product
Figure 17 showcases the final product that has been derived from
the extensive research and planning process. The product is a
compact carry on boardgame which help an audience aged – to
accustom to living in Dubai. The nature of the materials were
chosen based of its denseness and durability, allowing the whole
product to be easily carriable.

The product remains at a length of 250 mm, a width of 500 mm

Fig 19, boardgame being held
and a thickness of 4 mm these measurements were ideal as
they allowed enough space on the inside for a whole
boardgame set up to be played on when opened. These sizes
are also ideal as they ensure that the product is light weight.
The products shape is a traditional rectangular book- like
structure with slightly curved edges.

The product also contains many features like a sturdy handle,

so the boardgame can be held and transported around easily.

A Velcro closing element which keeps the
boardgame shut and makes the boardgame
more compact to be simply stored, and two
pockets which will fit in any loose pieces of
the boardgame ( playing cards, dice etc,,)

For the actual boardgame design, it has been

laid out in a way which is fun to play because
of the playing cards that come along with it
designated on every color placed on the
boardgame, and also familiarize newcomers
to Dubai with all the attractions and important
destinations to visit and gives them an insight

follow in a fun and interactive way. Overall,
this product is a case in point of how design
Fig 21, boardgame front view Fig 22, card prototype
can be used to address different problems

Changes made compared to final sketch

1. The colors of the pockets have
changed from a deep cobalt blue to
a pastel blue.
2. A felt padding has been added to
the inside of the handle to ensure
comfort.
3. Both pockets were switched and
placed vertically.
4. The sides of the final product were
painted blue, but the original sketch
had plain sides.
5. Velcro was used to secure the
pockets instead of zippers.
6. Velcro was also used to secure the
whole boardgame instead of
buttons.
7. The layout of the inside of the
boardgame has slightly changed as
I wanted it to flow through both the
pieces of MDF, then I positioned
the photos randomly along the
design of the boardgame outline.

Improvements to the product

As mentioned in the limitations, the target

Another limitation discovered is

that the pockets were positioned
