Exercise 2
One of the most remarkable of migrations is that taken each fall by the North
American monarch butterfly. Often called "the wanderer', it is tough and powerful as
butterflies go, and is capable of long flights at speeds of 20 miles per hour or more
Monarch butterflies have been observed within 200 miles of the coast Of England, a
(5) though they are not native to Europe They are now also found in Asia and Australia,
perhaps having been carried there by the wind. The monarch produces as many as four
generations a year, each one of which ventures a little farther north. It is the last of these
that migrates before the onset of winter. From as far north as Canada, swarms of
butterflies begin gathering from their homes in the fields, clinging to trees and bushes
by the thousands. Then, on just the right breeze, they rise in a red cloud and head south.
Not all get there. But enough do to ensure the survival of the species until the following
spring.

1. In line 7 the word “these” refers to

(B) Species

(D) Swarms

Some kinds of animals that are still around today were in existence millions of
(2) years ago during the time of the dinosaurs.
One of these survivors is the crocodile, which has been around for about 100
million years. Today's crocodiles can grow to a length of 20 feet and weigh about a ton.
Their prehistoric ancestors were about two and a half times the size of today's animals.
Another survivor from the past is the Galapagos tortoise, whose history goes back
around 200 million years. The tortoise of today has not evolved much over the last 200
million years; it looks about the same now as it did way back then
The oldest survivor from prehistoric times is, can you believe it, the cockroach.
Cockroaches have been able to stick around for more than 250 million years. The main
reason for their incredible endurance is their ability to live in all kinds of conditions and
survive on all kinds of food.
2. The word “time” in line 2 could best be replaced by
(A) Hour
(B) Era
(C) Clock

Carbon tetrachloride is a colorless and inflammable liquid that can be produced by
combining carbon disulfide and chlorine. This compound is widely used in industry today
because of its effectiveness as a solvent as well as its use in the production of propellants.
Despite its widespread use in industry, carbon tetrachloride has been banned for
(5) home use. In the past, carbon tetrachloride was a common ingredient in cleaning
compounds that were used throughout the home, but it was found to be dangerous:
when heated, it changes into a poisonous gas that can cause severe illness and even death
if it is inhaled. Because of this dangerous characteristic, the United States revoked
permission for the home use of carbon tetrachloride in 1970. The United States has taken
similar action with various other chemical compounds.

It has been noted that, traditionally, courts have granted divorces on fault grounds:
one spouse is deemed to be at fault in causing the divorce. More and more today,
however, divorces are being granted on a no-fault basis.
Proponents of no-fault divorces argue that when a marriage fails, it is rarely the
case that one marriage partner is completely to blame and the other blameless. A failed
marriage is much more Often the result of mistakes by both partners
Another argument in favor of no-fault divorce is that proving fault in court, in a
public arena, is a destructive process that only serves to lengthen the divorce process and
that dramatically increases the negative feelings present in a divorce. If a couple can reach
a (10) decision to divorce without first deciding which partner is to blame, the divorce
settlement can be negotiated more easily and equitably, and the post-divorce healing
process can begin more rapidly.

5. The tone of this passage is

(A) Emotional
(B) Enthusiastic
(C) Introducing
(D) reactionary
