Introduction

strategic one. The role of the customer is to consume the company's products and services,
therefore creating income that may be re-invested in the business. Productivity in terms of
both quality and quantity will be determined by market needs.

Transitional Phasing

There is a wealth of information in this field about the


processes of transition and change management. The
transitional process consists of three phases: the last stage,
a transitional period, and a new beginning (Brandon,
2007). Endings: The first is the idea of changing things
around. Applied to e-learning, replacement of instructor-
led training and everything that it involves is typically
perceived as the “ending.” Learners, trainers, and
supervisors are prone to want to cling on to the “old-
ways.” But, by adopting change management approaches
individuals may begin to let go of this past, and have the
confidence and support to at least go into their “neutral
zone.” They are ready to give it a try. And, most crucially,
it will create the stage for good new beginnings that e-
learning may symbolise for them and the organization.
The neutral zone: The second way of thinking about
transformation is as a "journey," or a path taken from one
location to another. Students who decide to switch to
online instruction go through four distinct stages of
adaptation:

The four stages are:

•Phase 1—Denial;

•Phase 2—Resistance;

•Phase 3—Exploration; and

•Phase 4—Commitment.
